I am looking to make this investment after having gone through several waterproof jackets of 'lesser' makes.

There seem to be a million different types, cant tell the bloody difference and the American Golf near me dont stock a large variety of them. So are there any tips from people who have bought them or tried them on which are the better models? Which one should I be looking at if I want one that has some stretch in it? Was looking online and the Aron looks like it would do the trick. Anyone bought that and have feedback on it?

Any advice welcome

Thanks

Not sure what the different model names are, but I have a full zip one that work wonderfully for me. Best advice I can give is regardless of model, find a store that stocks GG and try some on. They are quite small in fitting, I'm normally an extra large in polo shirts, jumpers, etc, but the XL GG top I've got was to small, so had to go up to an XXL, which fits spot on and doesn't hinder my swing.

I have a 5yr old GG top and the waterproofing is briliant although to be fair anything with Gortex is excellent. GG are a little snug and they don't cover your backside so advice about trying them on is good. Mine is not tight but I do not have total freedom. I suspect they have probably improved stretch on them for newer models but you would only find that out by trying a couple and working out if you can go for your normal size or size up one. The good news is that once bought it will last you for decades and the rain will never get through.

Many different style and designs to choose from but really only 2 different models. Either Paclite GoreTex or Performance Gotetex. The Paclite is lighter and thiner and easier to pack away in your bag and has no lining. The Performance on the other hand is heavier and is lined so it is thicker and warmer.
Personally after much research and debate I went for the Paclite as I found it easier to swing in. Also my main concern for buying was to stay dry, not warmth so if needed I merely layer up.
Also you will need to go up a size as they are small/ tight fitting. I'm normally XL but went for XXL.

Are you looking for one with a lining or a paclite one ?

I have a full zip with a liner which is great in thr winter and a half zip paclite for summer

Go up a size indeed. Sound advice!

and if your using in winter get the performance shell rather than paclite.

model names vary from year to year and style half zip full zip half sleeves etc have a browse online you'll soon pick up the stykes name you wanty aND MAY FIND LAST YEARS COLOUR AT A GRETALY REDUCED COST.

Saved the pennies and went through a similar process earlier this year. Went for a performance shell, half zip, full sleeve one which I think was called Akron or something. I'm medium/large in most things and went large. Fits perfectly. Half zip one provides a nice fit to help the swing (less zip in the way) but the whole fit and design is all made perfectly for the golfer - this has been a bit of a revelation as I'm a complete nightmare to please with waterproofs...

Check out the adidas GoreTex range. Just as good as my GG gear at half the price. You can pick up a Jacket for around £110 from the likes of Function 18 and Clubehouse Direct

I've the performance she'll and it's great at keeping you warm and dry. Most have the strechy bad in middle of the shoulders I think but make sure you find somewhere to try on, big outlay to end up with the wrong size! I've long arms so had to up from large to extra large.

Also if you can hang on a month prices should come down as new range comes out.

Very much agree with those saying that you should try GG gear on for size before purchasing - I tried on loads of their stuff when looking for a good waterproof jacket earlier this year, couldn't find anything that fitted - the difference between a medium and large was much more than I'd anticipated.

Thanks, will try on and wait for a bit. If I am going to pay full whack I might as get the new version or ideally get last years at a discount

I think the styles and colours are pretty timeless so getting last years or this years is not really a big deal style wise. Go for the one you like, if it is last years then enjoy the slightly cheaper price.

I am also a GG fan in fact I wear my jacket for all manner of outside activity because its light windproof and obviously rain proof when caught out.. 12 years old and worn at least 4 times a week..

The only difference between mine and the newer version was the pocket was in the other side! I really wouldn't worry about waiting for the newer version, you can save yourself £40-50 on the new season style. They've not really changed much in the last few years.

I have got a performance shell long sleeve for the winter and a paclite short sleeve for the summer.

Can't recommend them enough, been very happy with both so far.
