I’m beginning to wonder about technology being overtaken by the need, and greed, of the big manufacturers to change models year in year out. They have no choice really when each feel they will fall behind if they don’t.

To explain, I know a few guys, really good players, who are discovering how good the ping G5 driver is. Besides, you can get these drivers for very little money with all kinds of shafts and I’m now using one myself. I’m not a long hitter but this has given me another few yards for sure.

I think that we are all going to hit the ball so far then plateau. Its part of the manafacturers job to say that isnt so and that the new driver will in facy add 10,15,30 yards or more. I use the Hi bore xls, have tried lots of newer drivers to no avail, saving myself money. Now if they told me a putter never missed!!!!!!!

My G5 has a red graphalloy shaft in it and I wouldn't swap it for anything.......although, having said that, I'm off to a G15 demo day on Friday............. :)

Yup. Smiffy said the same thing to me last week, and I'm seeing if I can get a few bob together to get one.

However, I also like Cobra woods, and there are some '08 versions out there which are also rediculously cheap to get hold of atm.

Which one is best ?

There's only one way to find out.....

If you wanna upgrade, I'll take the G5 off your hands ;)

Are you sure?
The sweet spot is almost worn out  ;)

That's fine by me - it's the one part of the club I never use, anyway.

Last I heard it had a crack in it.

You're right, but that was my old G2

interesting, I have a G5 sitting in the cupboard, TFC stiff shaft. I think I need to get it out again and try it - could be I have what is needed all the time.

since it didn't cost me much, I could try it with a different shaft.

G5 was as good as they come. I had one except I never got on with it...not the head, but the Aldila shaft.
I bought mine for £140 (they were £199 at the time), sold it for £70 :(

Seeing as there is little difference between the G5 and G10, I'd agree for sure. Currently trading for almost-pocket-money.

I liked the G5. I thought it marked a real comeback at the time for Ping who seemed to have fallen behind the likes of the bigger players (Cally, TM and Titleist) and even middle of the road brands were producing comparable stuff (Wilson, Cleveland).

The G5 for me put Ping back up in the upper echelon of drivers particularly for a wide spectrum of golfers. I'm not overly sure how much the G10 really moved it on in my opinion but the G15 seem to have brought Ping right up to date again. Can't wait to try one
