Know its a bit far off, but in maybe 5 years or so we intend to retire to the area, ideally moving to St Anne's or Lytham.

Have family in the Blackpool area - visit there regularly - and have played a few courses (North Shore, Staining, Stanley Park) but wondered if there are any locals on here who could offer any advice on membership of clubs in that area.

Appreciate some of the better ones may involve a waiting list, and will need to try them all :) hence the forward thinking. May also influence where we end up living. Am thinking of the links courses for all year play, but think Royal Lytham will be out of my budget!

Any advice from local members?

The two that jump out to me are St Annes Old Links and Fairhaven. Both have waiting lists and joining fees but are really great members clubs. Both are a great courses too but IMO Fairhaven is a better. Fairhaven is more heathland than Links and SAOL is a tradition links. Both are almost always in amazing condition and playable all year with superb greens. I have a country membership at SAOL so if your ever up and fancy a game we can make a plan.

Don't forget Royal Fleetwood neither, there's usually always a decent deal knocking about for there.

I live in Lytham and a member at Fairhaven. Played all the courses this way a number of times so feel free to pm me and I'll happily help answer any questions you have

Thanks guys, appreciated, especially the kind offers of a gave sometime!
Stuart - isn't Fleetwood the poor relation compared to the others mentioned....have seen a few disparaging remarks on the forum in the past?

Steve , it's no Fairhaven or SAOL but I've always enjoyed playing it. Play it and see for yourself , you might just like it.

Some of it is tongue in cheek.....

Fleetwood is a nice Course, I enjoy playing there. Nowhere near as good as saol etc but a good members club and very reasonable cost wise. Depends where you fancy living really as Fleetwood is a trek to get to if you're not up that way.

Saol and Fairhaven the 2 "best" in my view, welcome to join me for a game anytime

Like I say depends where you want to live, Stanley Park is a really good layout and cracking members club but gets wet and is owned by Mac Golf/Crown golf or the like.

I'll drop you a pm with my view on the courses I'm a bit more detail etc

Cheers Jocko, look forward to the PM. Definitely up for a game later in the year - especially SAOL. Have played Stanley Park and know it gets wet, hence my preference for a links course or something free draining (like Fairhaven).

Fleetwood might be an option if we ended up in Thornton Clevelys area (which is close to family), so thanks for your views, and for yours Stuart.

My personal favorite in the area is still Lytham Green Drive, but it's a pure parkland course, so I don't know how well that holds up in winter. Everyone there was super friendly and welcoming and it seemed to be a really nice club. I really enjoyed Fairhaven as well.

Good shout. I've not played LGD for a long time but I enjoyed it. I'm not sure how it holds up in Winter. They also have no joining fee at present too !

SAOL is great BUT Fleetwood greens are much better....

That's a bold statement :)
SAOL are possibly the best greens I've played in the UK.

OP..
Fleetwood is decent, I wouldn't hesitate being a member there if I lived north of Blackpool.
You can't go wrong with SAOL & Fairhaven though. Superb clubs, courses and facilities.

SAOL is great BUT Fleetwood greens are much better....not that SAOL have bad greens I hasten to add..

Not sure I've ever heard anyone say this......

Fleetwood was in pretty good nick last time I played there but, as Qwerty says, the greens at SAOL are pretty much as good as anything you'll find all year round, and regularly better than Royal Lytham's. The new greenkeeper has really done well there after they lost their head GK at the start of last season.

Nairn probably still the best I've played on.

Nice photo of the 9th at SAOL this morning their Twitter.
Despite the weather you just know its going to be bone dry.

I've just realised it isn't wise looking at Live(ish) local course photos when your stuck at work on a crappy Monday morning :(

I've only played at Fleetwood after getting some lessons with the pro. As an non-member I found the members and staff very friendly and the course looked great even at the end of a busy season. Will be returning this year for more of the same :)
