A few of us today decided to have out very own Ryder cup style event, it was great fun overall but a moment earlier had us all with a bit of a puzzle, and a good laugh. On one of the holes our opponents teed off on a drivable par 4, he driver it to the side of the green. His partner, playing the second shot, decided to hit a high flop shot over the bunker. To his distraught he thinned it straight into his partners thigh, who was stood at the side of the bunker, the ball ricocheted off him and trickles to within 15 feet of the hole. After laughing at him for a few minutes we had to decide of there was a rule infringement here. None of us knew what the ruling was, so we decided they should carry on from where the ball had finished. Were we correct in thinking this was the right course of action?

Anyone interested, he two putted to half the hole.

If a ball struck by you is deflected or stopped by you, your partner, your caddies or your equipment, you incur a penalty of one stroke and play the ball as it lies (Rule 19-2).

So should have lost the hole.

Yes, you proceeded correctly - provided you added the one shot penalty. Rule 19.2. I suspect you didn't and therefore should probably should have lost the hole
