Hi!

As it is Thanksgiving here in the USA, I get to play golf two days in a row and as an experiment I am going to be using a retro set of golf clubs from the 1990's I went to my local Play It Again Sports and picked up a Callaway GBB Driver 10 degree R Flex Graphite, steel shafted BB 3 and 5 woods and 4-PW Eye 2's with Cleveland 588 56 degree and 60 degree wedges together with my trusty Ping putter.

I did not play golf in this era. The pro thinks I will not see a reduction in scoring but what do you guys think? I am hoping the smaller headed driver may help me swing more steadily and hit more fairways. Either way, it should be fun.

I think you will notice a little drop in driver distance, but apart from that not that much of a difference, provided you do hit a few shots on the range with the clubs in advance to get used to the feel and that they fit you as far as length and lie angle is concerned. Let us know how it works out and have a great game and a happy and peaceful Thanksgiving.

Where you may see a difference is in scoring. Even hitting them well you will look at the shot and think it's a 4 iron. You could easily be 20 yards short/long just by using different clubs.

About eight years ago on my stag do, I played with a random set of very old clubs, most of which you would see in a driving range bin! The driver was an old persimmon driver with a tiny head. What I found was the driver launched very low but was long on good strikes. You could shape it very easily! The irons were the biggest difference - at least 2 or 3 clubs shorter! It was good fun - enjoy!

Day One report!

Iain P: What I meant was the pro said she did not think my scores would change.

I use irons and wedges from that time period anyway (Eye2's and 588's) and my putter is from the same era. I did not use the three wood at all so I will concentrate on the Driver and 5 wood.

Callaway Great Big Bertha Warbird 10 Degrees It has a regular flex Prolite 45 shaft in at 45 inches. I am told this is an aftermarket shaft and not the original shaft. It is a very impressive driver. I hit my usual 12 degree Cleveland Hi-Bore very high, this is a far lower trajectory club but certainly not a worm burner. It feels a lot more solid and the noise is considerably more muted. if anything I hit it a few yards further than my modern driver as the flight is more boring (carry is about the same) but it rolls out when it lands. Misses are different than my driver but not in a bad way...not as far off line, heel shots tend to go lower and toe shots higher. In short, I was highly impressed with this driver. It was different but not hard to hit as I had envisioned.

I used the five wood twice (Warbird with Memphis 10 steel shaft) and on both occasions hit it about 200 yards, I hit one green with it from 203 - it is a very solid club and seems to be about 5-10 yards longer than my three hybrid with a slightly lower trajectory.

I shot 46-40. I did not hit a single good iron shot until well into the back nine (I am working on revamping my swing at the moment) - I only hit four greens and did not putt especially well. 40 equals my best back nine score and I hit slightly more fairways than normal.

Day two promises to be slightly cooler. About 19 degrees Celsius. Carved out of the Sonoran Desert, Apache Creek, one of my favorite courses in the area at the foot of the Superstition Mountains. 6361 yards with a par of 71. I am looking forward to it.

So anyone else been surprised by the performance of these obsolete clubs?

Craig.
