I had a practice round at Fulford today and it as one of the most enjoyable days I have ever spent on a golf course.
We started off with 20 minutes on one of the clubs huge practice grounds and then 15 mins on the practice green. I realised I was in for a different calibre of green when I put a couple of balls on the fringe of the green and they rolled off!
We played from the white tees and it seemed really strange playing fairway woods or long irons into par 4's, it really isn't South Bradford! The long par 4's are exactly that but the fairways were firm and gave plenty of roll to compensate.
Unfortunately the greens were being micro tined while we were playing so the greens were not as good as Paul (our pro) had promised me but hopefully they will be up to their usual standard for the pro am in July. The course itself was absolutely stunning, well deserving its reputation. It is the most prestigious course I have ever played and as they say "Class tells".
I played reasonably for a 1st visit off the white tees, a 97, 25 over par. I 3 putted 3 of the 1st 6 greens, screaming them past the hole because of the difference in speed from my own course. My general play was pleasing but again, I am not used to playing such long approach shots and definitely made a few bad shot choices despite having my GPS with me.
Paul is, by his own admission a short hitter for a pro, I was averaging 20 yards further than him but he missed only 3 fairways with the driver, 2 of those being less than 6 feet off the short stuff. His long game was very consistant throughout but his short game was excellent. He does really pride himself on his short game and justifiably so, his wedge play seemed radio controlled. He had several very bad rolls on the greens (we had to wait on quite a few greens as the machine finished micro tining them) and he could have scored much better than the 76 he carded. When the greens recover from being treated I'm sure some of his lipped putts will drop.
All in all it was unbeatable, a great course, good company and the chance to watch the guy who I take lessons from plot his way around a championship course. It was even better that he gave me a shot a hole and I took a fiver off him !
I was tremendously impressed with the whole set up and playing it for £20 due because it was classed as a practice round for the pro-am really was the icing on the cake. :D

It is a beautiful course, well worth a bundle of anyone's money.

My best buddie, sadly no longer with us, was a member there, so have played it quite a few times, and its a special place for me as you can imagine.
