I only recently found out that my car has a little arrow indicator on the fuel gauge that tells me what side the fuel cap is on.

Genius i thought and about bloody time!

I'm not afraid to admit that this was the first I had ever heard of it and thought it would be worth sharing.

Sadly I don't think all car manufacturers adopt this as a standard but it might help a bit.

The fuel pump symbol on the dash will have the fuel pipe coming out of which ever side the cap is on. Thought everyone knew this? Great in hire cars!!

I confess I didn't know that, new fact for the day sorted already.

Thought this was common knowledge and been standard practise for years, not sure any recent cars don't do this?
(Obviously those with a pump symbol)

She needed it....

Isn't that an urban myth? What difference does it make anyway? All petrol pump hoses must be long enough to reach both sides of a car when parked at the pump.

Ha ha. When I was a student I worked in a petrol station and this actually happened one day when I was on.

I couldn't serve the guy for laughing. He took it in good grace.

Nope, my VW Transporter (63 plate)has the pipe coming out the right and the arrow pointing and on the left. My filler cap is on the left.

The hose isn't always long enough for my Doblo van.
My car is on the opposite side to my van so I always forget which side I need. Hence I use the symbol on the dash to check.

there are other things that people don't realise, such as some vehicles have a hook on the inside of the fuel flap to slot the cap on so the cap doesn't dangle on the paintwork below the cap. Also some have a little plastic tool on the inside of the flap to unscrew the dust cap on the tyre valve.

If we're on extra items many don't know that can be helpful, VW use to have a spring loaded cap at the top of the fuel filling neck that covered the breather hose. Opening up the sprung cap balanced the fuel much quicker and enabled you to fully fill the tank more easily.
:)

I have two cars of different models but same manufacturer and only 2 years apart and the fuel caps are on different sides. It's bloody annoying more than anything as although the hoses normally stretch far enough, the lanes at the fuel pumps aren't always wide enough to do it across when two cars are in at the same time.
I just need to remember A=L and C=R.

Plus there's always some impatient git that wants to drive in between the pumps and you can be in the way if you are standing there filling up on the 'wrong' side.
