Looks likely I will be living in the Reading area next season and will probably be looking to join a new club.
What I'm looking for is:

Preferably 18 but would consider 9 holes
Friendly and unpretentious.
Fairly relaxed dress code, I ain't wearing knee length socks with shorts.
Would prefer drawn comps as will be joining on my own.
Well stocked bar.
Lots of single women members.

My current club is Bassett Down, near Swindon , which ticks most of those boxes and I play off 22.

Any suggestions would be great.

Which side of Reading. You'd be more than welcome to wander down the A329M to Royal Ascot. If not I've always found Caversham Heath a very friendly place to play and a decent test

Played Caversham on a 2-fore-1 a couple of weeks ago. Nice club house and a fairly nice course, although the greens were like concrete! Fast and true though, which was nice.

Re: You could join the De Vere Club at Wokefield Park. If you're interested, let me know because I can recommend you and get some extra points! :)

Someone at my club suggested Wokefield Park, but am I correct, that you pay a membership, then have to pay to play?

I was a member at Reading Golf Club, which is worth a look. It was thirty years ago, nice course, but couldn't comment on the membership as most of the ones there when I was are probably dead. Calcot Park is another good course.

No. You purchase 100 points for just over £300 and then points are deducted each time you play with the number being determined by the time, i.e. Saturday morning (8) is more points than a midweek twilight (3). When your points have run out, you just top them up. Get a number of other benefits with the De Vere group. I think it is excellent value and ideal for someone who wants to play in comps etc, but can't justify the cost of a full 7 day membership

On a completely unrelated note, any chance you can shrink the size of the image you have as your avatar? It's quite unsettling! :D

If he shot a 6 and said he got a 3, he got a 3 !!

What about Calcot park, lovely course and great clubhouse, food was brilliant when I played there last year.

Found Calcot gets very wet in the winter as does (did) Wokefield which always had a couple of holes out of play after heavy winter rain. Caversham's greens were hard when I played in a club match their last month but boy were they true and quick and probably the best I've putted on anywhere in the UK this year.

Caversham Heath is nice fun course with good members and very relaxed - and possibly some of the best fairways in the country. Greens used to be an issue but that appears to have dramatically improved.
