i run one from my home network for my dad in france and when i travel. cost about 100 to set up, but we have more than got that back. all free vpn i have used have been awful and the paid for ones were not much better..

Don't the free ones have a reduced bandwidth? May be worth checking out first.

Don't go free. In my experience you'll either get incredibly restricted download speeds or it'll work well for a week or so then things go wrong and you end up searching for a new 'free' one.

what do you want to do with it, accessing back to the UK for Iplayer etc? or for hiding behind to access torrents and the like?

Just checked my box and it was more than i thought, prob about 150 (Draytek 2830 non wifi version, now end of life i think). You also need to pay a yearly sub for a managed DNS service, i pay $29 a year.
Just did a test on my laptop sat at home.
On home wifi 10ms ping, 27mbps down, 9.5 up
On home wifi with VPN connection 12ms ping, 20.4 down, 8.8 up.
If you have friend and family that would also use it, spread the cost. Thats what we did, my dad, his mate in france and 1 chucked in 50 each and i host it. They get decent reliable VPN service in france and i use it when travelling.
