Fracking

Re: Facking

Missed an R in the title lad. Thought this was a bedroom related thread.

Really really tough call. The method can have major environmental drawbacks. We need the natural resources it provides and this is a much cheaper way of getting it and could (probably wont though in reality) reduce our energy bills. People will no doubt be extremely unhappy with this going ahead in there local areas because of the potential for water system contamination. Fact is that we are sitting on some fairly large reserves of the stuff and we may have no alternative but to use fracking to retrieve these.

Re: Facking

It would be a fracking shame if we didn't take advantage of the opportunity. It beats being an energy slave to the Russians.

If it was in Birmingham not balcombe it wouldn't be as much of a story

Re: Facking

It can't be any worse than the shallow mining that went on in many areas in the past.

If the technology isn't right to get it out now then perhaps in a few more years it'll be more easily harvested. It's got to be used at some time.

Re: Facking

I say leave it where it is for now.

Energy is expensive (as it should be) but it's still not unavailable and the methodology in fracking still has a lot of question marks over it.

And as for offering tax breaks to the companies who want to extract it, they'll be more than prepared to do that without having to give away our tax!

In 50 to 100 years time that oil/gas in the ground could be hugely more valuable.

Re: Facking

What gets me is all the protesters the majority are hippy types with there tie dye clothes and matted hair. They have got nothing better to do. You do see a few normal people but its rare. And some of them stink. And I know this as I work in security and deal with these protester all the time. The crowd normally drops on benefit days also.and I bet when these people get home they flick a switch to turn on a light or tv(nuclear energy) and if cold turn heating on. (Fracking in the near future) if they want to really complain live in a cave or tent.

Re: Facking

It seems to me that we're going to wring every last drop of oil and gas out of this planet in as short a period of time as possible.

It's lazy, short sighted and smacks of desperation.

The Swampy people

Re: Facking

Interesting discussion.

Fracking has had a huge impact on the US economy, they have massively reduced their deficit due to less imports (oil).

If it has the knock on effect of reducing them meddling in the Middle East then that could be a nice bonus

Re: Facking

It's not so different than taking it from the North Sea in my opinion. The World economies are based on oil and to a degree gas now, we cant just ignore the fact, if we dont get it here then we have to import it from elsewhere at a higher cost, also the supplier will have to extract it.

I can see the argument that it is only temporary but thats true of most resources we consume, hopefully there will be new technologies in the future that will generate the ever increasing amounts of energy our societies need. If not then leaving it in the ground will only bring on the breakdown of civilisation earlier.

Re: Facking

Yep loads of times, it's a fracking nightmare. :whoo:

You missed the point, I wasn't picking on brum specifically it just starts with a b!!

But balcombe it's not:lol:
