Played on Sunday behind a fourball sharing clubs, made for a very slow game.
It was clear they were visitors, although I always welcome and acknowledge visitors. However to be fair to them I think our pro should have checked that they all had clubs, and to make them aware of a local rule of teeing up on the course, as they didn't tee up.
It was also obvious that they were new starters, which again is not an issue as we all had to start at some time. However golfing etiquette aside, they should have had some human appreciation/consideration to let us through. I know I did when I started when I didn't know about golfing etiquette.
Whilst admittedly I could have told them to tee up, I didn't want to appear pompous and put them off the game.
Our pro should have done more beforehand than merely collect his share of the green fee !

I agree with you, I don't necessarily blame the people playing, as you said we all had to start somewhere, but I do think your pro could have done a bit more.

Perhaps the roots are in ensuring proper number of fees taken i.e one bag = one fee but never really understood what appears to be the 'sacrilege' of two players sharing a bag of clubs for social play. Splitting one lads set of 14 between the two players just with an extra bag still means the 4-ball had the same amount of clubs (& sharing putter of course but its not like two players are putting at the same time)

Pretty obvious requirements in any comp of course

I've never played a course where teeing up was required. I take it its a winter rules thing to protect fairways etc, how does it work as you approach the hole though (say 40 to go) Although by weather forecasts in some areas of the UK it might not have seemed much like winter to those guys if you live in one of the luckier areas

I'm sure its not just me that thinks if your going to play at a proper golf course and you've paid your DD or green fee or whatever , every golfer should have there own golf bag and clubs.
I just dont see the reason why someone should show up to an actual golf course without there own stuff that goes for a new player too.
Starter sets and second hand clubs are not too expensive if your going to take up the sport.

The two that jump to mind are:
A spur of the moment chance for a round while on holiday/visiting (didn't bring own clubs)
Lad on his first trip/s on a course to see if he might take it up (after he's considerately had several range visits obviously)

Either of the above could happen at any course and would mean needlessly hiring a set if your mate has plenty clubs to share but no spare bag to put them in

Splitting a full set into two bags just so that it looks appropriate seems a bit silly, its still 14 clubs in total

I think at ours when it happens(not seen for a long time)The 4th person might jump on with them.Only one from the group goes to club shop to sign in so the shop/ pro does not seem them. You can tell because of what they are wearing, trainers cargo trousers and a hoodie.
not great but as long as they get on with it and don't hold you up or let you play through.

We Tee up in the winter and you tee up anywhere on the fairway up until it meets the green, ie tee up 1 inch off green, not sure it protects the fairway and don't like it myself, but thems the rules at our place.

On the teeing it up, then a quick polite word shouldn't cause offence.

On the sharing a bag. I don't have an issue with this in principle providing it doesn't slow up play.

Trouble is if they've been let on the course already then their's probably not much you can do about it. Either a course ranger\starter should have probably picked this up before they tee'd off. But I know on a lot of courses they don't have them all the time.

I would't expect a pro to be checking this really. If they had proper golf attire when they paid then I think the pro would quite rightly assume they had clubs etc.

Sharing bags nearly always slows play due to having to pass equipment around, people cannot play when they are ready unless the take the right club. Often those sharing clubs are doing so due to not being regular or experienced golfers or are just trying the game.

If a couple of good players shared a bag I doubt it would affect pace but pretty much all good players have their own set with them.

We had a two sharing one set of clubs on saturday. The man and a woman were walking down the 8th, the man was walking with an electric trolley, this was around 1.30pm, prime time. I walked over to them and asked why they were sharing a set of clubs as this was against club rules. "NO its not" the man replied. "I think you will find it is, are you members?" Well you would have thought I had accused him of some heinous crime. The woman had now joined us. Both were seniors by the way. "He had back surgery in November and has just started playing again". So I replied, that doesn't give you the right to have one set of clubs between you. The man now was getting real shitty, craning his neck forward and going red in the face. "Come away from him, come away from him" he snarled, and proceeded to walk away. The woman was about to take her shot when she looked up at me and said he was unable to carry a bag."Whats your name, I`m going to have a word with Simon(the manager) when I get in" Paul Brooker, Jedi Knight and I run the scratch B team I told her. AS I turned and walked away, I stopped and turned back towards them I said" Who`s is that trolley and bag then". "Mine" she replied. "Who put the bag on the trolley then" "I did, he cannot lift his bag out of the boot of the car". " So why didn't you lift his out and onto his trolley for him then you could have used two sets and not held people up". I walked away smiling and shaking my head. They were still taking and glaring at me as they putted out on the 8th. Seniors eh! Just because your old, belligerent, grumpy doesn't excuse you from knowing the rules of your club, you should be setting an example.
By the way Westy, I think you would get hung, drawn and quartered if you tried that at Knebworth.

Wow!

Do you not know the basic rules of golf numpty, do you know any rules of golf?? But I suppose you go out 4,5, or maybe a 6 ball and F**k everyone else. Football shirt, jeans and 6 cans of Stella in the bag. Private club or Municipal, neither I suspect as you seem to think that the rules of golf don't apply to you. Unlike Woburn we do not have marshals policing the course with buggies, so the members have to do it themselves, this is our club and it is owned by the members, so if we see something that is not right we have a word.
Westy, I cannot believe a club of your standing would allow that to happen, especially on a saturday afternoon. Jesus your standards are slipping. But hey, maybe it was jmf1488, that would be ok then, he can do just as he pleases, happy days.x

They were new to golf....give them some leeway. Now if they knew the local rule and just ignored it - that's a different matter. What would have annoyed me most was not letting people through. It's hard to defend that. Even if you don't know the rule, a bit of awareness is all that is required. I was always aware of how my golf was affecting others when I started.

In these situations I ask to play through after a few holes of not being asked

Rules of golf - rule 4-4b
At North Berwick last Sunday there were a few 6 balls playing a comp behind us, all very low h/c players seemingly , but they all had their own clubs.;)

Jesus there are some unsympathetic people on here! As long as it's holding up why the hell would you care how many bags they have? Let alone take it on yourself to walk over and "have a word"! Too many people think they are more important than they are in some golf clubs. Survey first, solutions after. I'm glad I haven't come across anyone jobs worthy in my time at my club, as someone else said that's not what golf needs!
