One for the rules experts folks. In better ball stroke play, how should the card be marked? Had a couple returned yesterday at our place with only one score recorded at each hole, turns out it was the best net score between the two players. No record of any gross scores or what player it was. It's just curiosity on my part btw, we recorded each player as A & B then however scored on that hole we recorded the gross and net score as the strokes dictated.

You only need one score recorded per hole, but it must be a gross score (nett as well if you want but not mandatory) and recorded under the column for the relevant player.

If there's only a best nett on the scorecard, it's not possible to check it for correctness as the 2 players will probably have a different amount of shots.

This!

Best Gross will suffice (in the column of the player that scored it). Nett score may help but not necesssary. Both scores (and nett) fine as well if there's time!

Thanks guys, appreciate the quick responses , I struggled to find anything clear in the r&a website, but probably just me, would you expect to be dq'd if you only recorded net score then? One of our group panicking as his team would get a place if score stands?

We DQ people if there is only scores in one column

And yes will be DQ if only Net scores are recorded but that's valid for any comp

Are you saying that if there is only a score recorded in column A and not B you D/Q that card?

That is the rules of the comp unless the pair confirm that only one person scored on each hole.

Crikey , have to say played at 7 different clubs and umpteen Opens and never heard of that . Is that a County thing or just your place Phil ?

It's been the 4BBB rules for our comps for as long as I have been a member. Each players score must go in the relevant column.

Sorry Phil but that seems just plain crazy to me, must make checking cards a right mare. You only need the one best score on each hole so the other one is irrelevant .

Just to confirm - you don't have to put in the score that doesn't count , so every score from each player isn't needed

But the score counting must be in the relevant column and not just in Column A for example ( unless player A had the best score on every hole )

And rightly so , have never seen that apart from greensomes and foursomes.

Got ya now

Or there were some other way of identifying which player each score belonged to. The rules require only that the gross scores to count are individually identifiable (Rule 31-3). You would have to accept, in my view, a card on which all the scores were in the same column but Player A's were in black , Player B's were in red and there was a clear explanation that this was so. Columns are easier, though!

Thanks gents, just to clarify that only column A was filled in and it was the net score, no gross scores were recorded anywhere on the card. They have been dq'd as far as I know.
