Forum Distances - Mythology?

According to my GameGolf stats, when I claimed Longest Drive at HFH Camberley Heath it was 274 with Driver.... although i beat that with 297 on the 13th with a 3 wood, granted i positioned it perfectly to run down a path on a hill, but thats not the point!

I think I am longer than the average for both my age and my handicap according to GameGolf, and I'm a shortarse weakling.

There. I've said it.

:D

the stats quoted for my h/cap and age weren't far off ,maybe ten yards short of my averages ,but I might be ten yards out

I think many measure the distance they hit, by what the distance is on the card, then measure the distance they have to the hole when they get up to the ball. Often this doesn't equate to how far the ball has went.

On a lot of GPS watches there is a "measure distance" option. I have used that for myself and others when they have screamed one up the fairway. It is interesting to see the real figures, GPS is pretty darned accurate. Unsurprisingly most people over estimate their hitting. It has certainly helped me have a realistic idea of my distances.

You are quite right about your comment. The tee could be forward of the point where the hole measurement was taken for example.

Also if I am no mistaken, the measurement is taken following the flow of the fairway and not as the crow flies? So if someone is cutting the corner with their drive it might not be going as far as the thought.

This was a bit of an eye opener to me. I'd scream one down the middle of the fairway (one of the few that hadn't disappeared into the undergrowth) and I'd measure it to check the immense length. I was often surprised that my assumed distance didn't always match up to the 'mental' distance I'd have given myself in the past. I am not short by any means however I think I had visions of grandeur when assuming the distance hit of my longer drives!!

Not really surprised tbh, I know exactly how far I carry my driver (trackman) and am probably slightly above average. Carry it 225 with a decent but not stellar hit, obviously necky ones less so.

That's me. Carry 225 ish, roll out to whatever, but could be 250 ish. The thing for me is 10 years ago I carried it the same with a 98 mph swing speed, now I carry the same with a 93 mph speed. Modern tech, who would have thought it.

Don't know about anyone else, but I tend to try and hit the ball as far as I need to with every club in the bag. That works for me.......most of the time!!

240 with rollout is about my driver on a normal good hit. Not that I hit it much playing a par 3 course...

7 iron is 130 carry. I base my iron distances out fron that.

We all get those weird outliers though.

I hit a 3 wood over 270 last season, no wind or slope assistance, just pured it.

Probably only do that one or two times a year though.
