Morning All

One for the NW crew

Me and my mates are looking for a little day trip - we don't mind the travel so we have earmarked Formby as a possible destination

So is it worth the drive for a day and the £140 day ticket ?

Cheers

it worth every penny. also, you happen to be at the home of probably the best putting coaches in the country. the putting lessons i had there made a huge difference. expensive though

Definitely worth the trip, and if you haven't played Hillside, I would consider looking into deals for accomodation and 18 holes on each.

Andy, don't restart the old Formby v Hillside debate!

#badman :D

We would have looked at that Andy but only got one day to play with

100% yes.

It's a great course in a stunning setting, worth every penny and the drive up, one of my favourite courses.

Yes its a top top track.

Now all we need to do is wait for the liverbirdie post saying you need to be going to Hillside instead :whoo:

Are you looking at Formby or Formby Hall, as they’re different courses. Formby Hall is great, I’ve never played Formby.

Definitely play Hillside as that’s on par with Birkdale, and if you’ve got the cash, Southport and Ainsdale is a great course.

Source: I live in Southport and used to be a member at Hillsdie and have played SnA and Formby Hall.

Yes, it's well worth it. BUT, give them a call first. I have heard that they are struggling with the greens a bit this Summer.

I know a few have mentioned Birkdale if you are making a long journey but as you have not specified a time in your post this maybe of some/no use to you.

RB is currently closed now until the week after the open for the members and visitors is back on from August I believe. I can check with some friends who are members if you need to know any specifics.

This was true the start of the year the greens were in ropey states (admittedly last played there in end of March) so have no idea if they have come on since then.

Also to actually answer the post its a great golf course well worth the trip.

Disappointing post, you've let me down :D

You know me, a man of few, but well chosen words.:p

A better option, but for November/march would be to go on their £55 weekend soup and sarnie rate, stay over and play Hillside on a winter rate the next day. Would probably work out the same including the accom(£130.00), albeit in early winter. They are still in very good nick then, also.

Or......

Go in the Ted Jarman at West lancs in early September (on a Sunday).

36 holes for about £45 (normal price for 18 is about £110), only open to 3-9 h/cappers though.

This!

Formby is definitely a great course, but the value is arguable - even for 2 rounds!

I even actually liked the oft abused 6th that has a blind 2nd shot to the green (there's a ginormous sand dune that you have to navigate over.

And if you could wring the necks of the pheasants that squawked at the top of my backs-wing on virtually every shot - until the lack of a squawk was just as off-putting! - then I'd be grateful!

I played Formby twice in a day and thoroughly enjoyed it, though it was on a deal and considerably cheaper - though it was also a considerable time ago too!

I found the back 9 slightly less outstanding than the front, whether that was from the ordeal or not, I couldn't really say! Many state that the front 9 of Formby and back 9 of Hillside would make an absolute peach of a course! Without trying to restart any debate, I was (slightly) more impressed with Hillside overall, but only marginally and probably because the back 9 quality tends to have more of an effect for me!

West Lancs is another fine course! To me, it's somewhat 'old-style'-ish compared to the other 2 - a little like Leven and a few other Scottish ones in that there's less 'manicuring' (definition?), so more 'natural', at least in many places. I've no preference for either style.
