I'm up at Formby Ladies on Wednesday in a comp, I've not played it before but I have played Formby.

Anyone played it recently and if so, any advice, pointers etc. If you've played both, what are the stand out differences, if any?

I believe its "within" the main course, if so, are there any internal OOB's?

I have played it several times and I do like it, it is a lot shorter than Formby and although it is inside the men's course I cannot recall any out of bounds, there is plenty of space between the two courses. One of its big defences is the rough which is nearly all small heather plants, which you find just off the fairways.
i am sure you will enjoy it, just keep it straight.

Yep, try and pick where to "overpower" it, as you can easily lose balls in the heather, even if it has been cut down. Especially the latter holes. Its a nice little course, but can still be tough if you don't plot your way around it.

They have little baby bunkers as well.

The cakes in their clubhouse are lovely as well Rob, don't want that little paunch getting bigger......:whoo:

It's a cracking course and enjoys the same type of turf and feel of Formby GC.

LB hits the nail on the head. Plot your way around and pull the big dog out only if you absolutely need too.

Take his advice Fish, I think his avatar has him taking 3 off the tee at a Formby ladies hole.........but that may just be a malicious rumour.:o

Hey Fish is that the Finch golf thing?
Asst pro at our place runs it.
Thought about playing but early err works do/drinking session tomorrow night so will be bladdered.
Looks a good place, enjoy the day.

I want to play this course, longest par 5 is 428 yards :D

Cheers everyone for the pointers, I'll keep the weapon in the car, 3w off the tee it is ;). Yes Greg, it's the Finch Amateur 4BBB.

Haha , the avatar is the 1st at the H4H day !! Tickled it round Formby Ladies is a couple over last time i played it. One of my rare good rounds this year !!!

Theres some good holes on there especially the 11th(I think) Dogleg right over the dunes then up to an elevated green.. Nice par 3 afterwards!
As others have said theres large areas of gorse & heather just of the fairways, they are/were only about 6" deep and you can just about muscle it out if needed but Theres lots of it down most fairways. It's what really tightens it up.

Nice lad Peter Finch, and a top player (it's not Rick shiels mate) he used to work at the Chilli dip Range over this way before he went to Preston GC and set this tour thing up.
Hope it works out for him.

Great day at Formby ladies, I think it was around -3 when we arrived.

Although it was totally white the frost was only a thin crust, in the first few holes we got some unlucky wild bounces off the fairway into the rough and on the 1st my partner ran out of fairway and ran into the heather as he attempted to drive the green never to see his ball again, lucky I got the par then :D

As the sun rose the frost slowly disappeared only to show the true beauty of this landscape, some great looking backdrops to some of the holes, especially the par 3's.

It took me a few holes to realise to leave all the woods alone, I was collecting enough heather to sell door-to-door for years and my white shoes were turning purple

Starting using my 5i off the tee and found I was hitting more greens in regulation and putting for birdies & pars but with 19 points on the front we knew we had to attack more on the back 9, which we did with an impressive 23 points off 3/4 handicap.

With myself playing off 15 and my partner off 8 we came in with 42 points, not a bad show I thought with neither of us playing this tricky course before, we knew we had left some points out on the front 9 but when we heard of scores coming in of 48 points with 27 scored on the back and we had 5 birdies on the back 9, what can you do!

So we came T18 and personally I doubt we could have come anywhere near the top 10 unless we had played the course before and didn't have such a frosty start but what made the day was the pair of lads we were drawn with, 2 great lads from North Wales (scousers) of which Adam in this picture off 2 won the longest drive on the 18th rolling up just before the greenside bunker

A great course to home in your iron play and with some very tricky greens, I'd love a day at Formby playing the ladies in the morning and then the gents in the afternoon, what a day that would be

Glad you enjoyed it Rob, nice little course isn't it.

You don't have to point out that scousers are sound, it just comes naturally.......

I wonder if Birchy could sort a March deal for the mens and ladies in one day........;)

Good Idea

Glad you enjoyed it. I play it every winter 4 rounds $120.00. Last weekend took the money. Overall and two nearest the pins. Would love to have a go in summer. Maybe a meet?
