Played my first foresomes match for
years this weekend in our clubs winter knockout. First competitive
match for 5 years too. My partner and I won 4/3 giving away 10 shots. Was great to play a match again and come out on the right side. We managed 5 birdies, helped when your partner chips in on the first and then holes a 30 footer for a birdie birdie start.

Anyone else late enjoy this format[SUP]?[/SUP]

I like foursomes...if you have a reliable partner, or someone you get along with. Played foursomes yesterday, in horrendous conditions as part of our winter league. Managed a cracking 24 points...and the winners had 33!

I like it when its serious comp for the club and its a person youv'e practiced with etc ,

i hate it when its a weekend comp tho , feel like i havent played a round of golf at all ..

Played greensomes for the first time this year. Really enjoyed it. Nice brisk format and a few more hits than foursomes.

I've always played teamsports prior to golf and enjoy the 'band of brothers' dynamic.

Find it hard to get my head around the hatred. Does anyone ever complain that they don't kick every ball in a game of footy?? All the other good things about golf (exercise, company, scenery etc) are still there. After all, on some days it's only the actual hitting the ball that spoils it...

Should be compulsory for the Winter weekends.
Lots more folk on the course/bar and a 2.5 to 3 hour round.

Hear! hear!

I really cannot understand the obsession with singles strokeplay, particularly in the winter months with the resultant effect upon course conditions at most clubs.

I really enjoy the 'team' aspect of it and not wanting to let your partner down. I find it can be difficult to get into a grove due to the alternate shots, but it provides a different challenge

Why would you when its a team sport ? golf is mainly an individual game with some team comps thrown in ,
Golf is many things for many people , its about handicap for me , and the winter months are about practice for the new season , i work 2 jobs and golf is my main pastime so when i do get out i dont wana be hitting every second shot ..

As i said tho the inter club matches really get the competitive juices flowing but in saying that we got to the final this year which meant alot of time in practice , playing , meetings etc .which means i only played one away comp where id normally play alot of scratch cups up & down the country ..
Next year back to singles for me

I can understand the first bit but what do u mean by the bit in red , i dont understand that bit ? groups of 4 people against groups of 3 on the course ..

Played Greensomes yesterday in horrendous conditions. Course should have been closed in reality, but it went ahead anyway. Played like an absolute moron (although I managed to contribute with a few long putts), but I couldn't hit an iron short or medium and I barely managed my 6 regulation drives. Guy I play with is off 5 and an absolute pleasure to play with, but man I must be as frustrating as hell for him. We ended up with 32 points and the winners had 38.

Still took us 5 hours though which was insane for the format.

Because those who are obsessed with singles stroke-play often say, like yourself, that it is about handicap and strokes taken yet most courses will be playing shorter, some will be playing "pick & place" and at times there will be temporary greens.

Therefore, in winter those courses do not represent a true test or reflection of handicap or ability.

Winter golf should be largely sociable, gentle exercise with practising being undertaken on the practice ground.

We dont have a practice ground tho , not one that reflects course conditions , if we had id say i would probably split my time between there and playing comps through the winter ..

I do see and can understand the other points you make very well tho ,
