For all the Cat 1 golfers

Took a about 5yrs to get there - starting at 9 yrs old I didn't have the length off the tee. Been single figures for about 40yrs.

Biggest single tip - don't beat yourself up when you hit bad shots. If you double bogey a hole, and rant at yourself you will almost certainly screw up the next few holes.

Learn to laugh at yourself - it will make a big difference.

Hard work plus a reliable swing mechanics, along with learning to play differing types of shots, see a good pro. Your handicap, concentrate on 100yds in to get to single figure, then it's starts to be a mental progression to get lower, more specific target orientated golf, course management, play to your strengths, and most of all learn not to get affected by bad shots.

There is a saying that the higher you are it's 95% physical 5% mental. The lower you are it's 95% mental, 5% physical.
Good book to read is Golf 54, Every shot must have a purpose, Pia Nielsson Lynn Marriott.

Point of order gents
The Forum is a place for Golfers of all capabilities , where everyone is to be treated with respect

Such phrases as "hackers , weekend warriors, Chompers " etc are frowned upon when used in a derogatory manner

So now you all know

I know what the term hacker means as some of my pals call me a hacker because of my handicap but have no idea what a chomper or a weekend warrior stands for. One of the reasons I want to get lower is to stop them calling me a hacker but tbh I don't mind it because to them I am a hacker compared to their handicaps.

A 12 handicapper is not a hacker - simple as that

A 12 handicapper is an above average golfer in the UK.

Try telling my pals that, as I said I don't mind getting called a hacker as it inspires me to get better.

What is a weekend warrior

Your pals are a bit clueless then and I wouldn't call them golfing pals if they call you a hacker

I play with a range of handicaps from scratch to 28 and wouldn't dream of calling any of them a hacker or suggest that they don't take the game seriously because they don't play of single figures

You seem to have a very strange attitude towards golf and golfers - in hoping that's because of the influence of your pals

I'm a weekend warrior ;)

So in golfing terms I go from a hacker to a weekend warrior, sounds good and look forward to reaching that title. I see you are playing off 5.7 and that quite a bit lower than I am at the moment, is there a starting limit to and ending limit to be a weekend warrior.

Tbh I am not sure if if they are clueless they all have real low handicapswith the highest playing of 6 so think they have the right to call me a hacker and there is no malice in it as it is just clean fun between pals. I think you have the wrong end of the stick.

But you are displaying that same attitude towards people on here - suggesting that anyone with a high handicap doesn't take the game serious and is a hacker etc.

Again you need to realise what the handicap is of the average golfer in the uk

I'm a weekend warrior Pete. Reason being that I require help at the end of my round by taking shots off the score.

When (if ever) that stops I will no longer be a weekend warrior.

Best be careful, a lot of folk are precious about their golfing ability classification ;)

You might be right about some folks ability I am starting to see that now but my intention was never to offend people.

The best way to improve your scoring is to regularly play with golfers who are better than you.

Totally agree with this. When I first started playing I got down to 12 quite quickly but then kind of got stuck there. I got friendly with the 2 lowest handicappers at the club and played a lot of bounce games with them. They didn't really give me any advice but I learned a lot just from watching them.

I wouldn't really care if someone off a lower handicap tried to poke fun at my higher handicap. At the end of the day they are only better than you at a hobby. Simple as that. Just like the bloke down the street might be better at collecting stamps than me or I might be better at squash than my mate from work.

Means absolutely nothing in the grand scheme of things. Non of us are getting paid to play.

What,better than lessons or practice.:mmm::rolleyes:

I would say it's certainly better than lessons in terms of scoring. Lessons improve your technical ability but that doesn't teach you how to get the ball round the course. I think someone already said learning to score and learning to swing are 2 very different things.
