The Unlucky Wales post & the bashing england team seem to be getting in papers here got me thinking. Win ugly or Draw/lose playing pretty football . As an irish football fan who travelled around the globe in the Jack Charlton era winning was far more important than playing super football. Irish grass roots footbal thrived because national team were winning not because they were playing great football & losing ,we played great against italy in a quarter final & lost having played ok against romania & won on pens , il take the win please . maybe English fans have a different outlook than us IRL,SCO, WAl & NI fans have .. but should ye ? Other teams are not gona roll over & let ye play or win having it yer own way. so win it how ever you can, thoughts on which ye would prefer please ?

Win ugly every time.

Otherwise, what's the point?

If we got back to the world cup semi or final and got knocked out playing "pretty" football, you certainly wouldn't hear ANYONE turn around and say "ah, nevermind, at least we play nicely".

The England team can't win with the fans or media. Yes, they're mostly a bunch of overpaid asshats, but had they decimated Wlaes comfortably there would be headlines in the paper saying "don't get too carried away, it was Wales that they played. They wouldn't do aas well against world class opposition".

I'm English. I support my national team through thick and thin. The performance last night was uninspiring, but that's how football is sometimes. We got the win, and that's what counts. They weren't at full strength and alot of those guys won't have played together before.

As it was pointed out, we must be doing something right to be running away with our group.

As everyone always says in golf, it's not how it's how many. I.E. It doesn't matter how you win, just get the job done.

A win is a win in my book, in the history books it will sat england beat Wales one nil, not Wales were unlucky played well the England team struggled etc. I dont believe in win at all costs like cheating etc. I'm sure some arsenal fans would like to see some of the results from the Graham one nil era than playing lovely pretty footie for having nothing in the cabinet for 6 years.

Its great to have both but I'd take win ugly. This is why alladyce gets a slating, Newcastle spoilt under keegan and robson with good attacking football, but what did they win, nothing. Alladyce tries to tighten them up and gets slated. Hope this doesn't happen at west ham too them being England's academy and all that!

So why is the National media so negative, maybe PaulS might have a professional insight into this ? as you can see most of us would take the win ugly option so why do England national team get slated for doing that . as someone said if they won 5nil the press would say its because Wales were rubbish but they win one nil , maybe Wales played well & it wasnt England been rubbish.

Because the media don't ever really write the truth? They just write whatever is going to sell stories.

The Welsh definitely looked improved last night and are over achieving with Gaz Speed in charge, I like the direction he's taking the team. I think it will benefit them in the long run.

I had to laugh at last nights commentary, England were very ordinary (as usual) and the commentator said "you wouldnt believe Wales were a hundred places behind England going by this performance" pretty much belittling Wales' team. I thought yea, England should only be a few places ahead of them.
When will the media realise that until the team starts winning trophies, they need to keep their heads down and work hard and most importantly try and be modest until they have the flair and ability. They dont have that at the moment (havent really in my lifetime), saying that every team in the UK is in the same boat.

But the commentator was telling the truthful facts and this highlights why the rankings are such a joke.No way should there be that huge gap between those two team.

Take last nights Scotland game,we pulverised them until the last 20 minutes and had we went in 4 up at half time they would have had no room to complain. As it happens we did our usual sit deep and scare the sh1t out of the fans for the last 20 minutes and just scraped over the line against a team that in my opinion are as bad as I have seen at Hampden in the last 10 years.

And where is this team ranked?2 places behind us (I think).

We won ugly and could/should have won ugly on Saturday but as said a win is a win,it is just a shame we all can't win playing like Barcelona!

I agree, the ranking is mad, it was the way it was said. Maybe a bit like when you play against a 28 handicapper and he hits one good shot the whole round, you feel obliged to tell them afterwards that "no way are you a 28 handicapper".

Because it is flavour of the month in the national media to build people/teams up and then knock them down. Private Eye rip the hell out of the sports media for doing it every so often.

Sports teams or individuals are never as good as the media claim when things are going well, and are conversely never as bad. You would have thought Arsenal were going to lose every game this season after that 8-2 hammering and Man Utd were going to win every game. Reality of course is somewhere in the middle.

To be honest I don't take much notice of the sports media's main reviews and prefer the columns (Martin Samuel especially) as theirs are the voices of reason in a sea of extremism. And as for the game reports where they just quote the manager "we might have lost 6-0 but it was the referee's fault for that first penalty that changed the game" ....

It does happen in the NFL too. Right now the Green Bay Packers haven't lost for seven months since they won the Super Bowl so commentators are crawling up their arses to declare them champions again this season. There is a reason few teams repeat but every year the pundits forget that to jump on the bandwagon.

Its going to be pretty hard to get them playing brilliant football when they only spend 3 or 4 weeks together in a year. Look at English Cricket, these guys basically play for England more than the county and train together more and it pays off. We can't expect them to turn up and start knocking it round like Barcelona.

And I know Spain is different, but almost the entire team is made up of Madrid and Barcelona players, so they play together a lot more than our players do.

It is always win ugly. I never played a football match to not win a game and to play pretty football. It was always win no matter what.

What people need to realise is they are saying Wales played well and they was unlucky. If they played well then you cannot expect England to play as well, very rarely do you get 2 teams play well. So yes Wales played well but we still won which is usually a sign of a good team.

People will say we shouldve battered them etc but we won it doesnt matter if we won 10-0 or 1-0 it is still 3 points for a win. A team can up there game and cause an upset so I dont see why people moan about a win.

Win ugly. Its the same in golf. Would you like to feel you hit the ball well but not scored or come off disappointed at your ball striking but with a medal win or a handicap cut

Basically apart from match report itself the rest is hyperbolic chanterings designed to sell papers and to be honest usually rarely reflecting the opinion of grass root support. I rarely by the papers now because of the incessant sensationalism not just in sport, football particularly, but with our news coverage and obsession with all things celebrity
