Had anyone looked at being tested for food intolerance (not allergy)? Speaking to HID, there are some days where she feels bloated/tired etc. never really looked at food being a cause. But looking to rule it out.
Any experience in this space. Not really looking to go via NHS.. they have their plate full. Also she does not have an allergy to anything

She could start by keeping a food diary and see if there is a common food eaten when symptoms occur?

Bread can be a big cause of bloating and IBS.

This is what I had to do at the advice of my GP when I went with a similar issue.

Keep a strict diary of food and drink intake and try to identify the trigger yourself - then avoid it!

The easiest/fastest way is to keep a food diary. Eliminate one food group at a time, then leave out for a week, then slowly reintroduce. The whole process may take up to a month, so maybe start in Jan as part of a diet etc rather than this time of year when it's incredibly difficult.

The normal culprits are most likely to be Gluten or Dairy if the effect is bloating, cramps irregular loo habits etc. For me, i would also remove sugary drinks (aka fizzy pop), reduce coffee and remove alcohol. I would google FODMAP and look at this, i always revert to a FODMAP diet when i have a colitis flare.(And i know i am OK with dairy)

Hydration plays a big factor also, simply drinking at least 2litres of water a day can help with digestion.

Gluten (aka Flour will be in both). So if she loves bread, look for a rye bread maybe. Gluten will also be in pasta etc, she may intolerances most commonly found with Coeliac disease.

To add to this - my problems are really hit and miss!

Bread is a trigger for me but it comes more often from me eating a big greasy dominos pizza than a sandwich...

I can eat Pasta with no issue - but whole wheat pasta is a big no no! :ROFLMAO:

There are several non-NHS paths you can take...or take them all!

[1] You can do an "at-home-send away" blood test and you get a report back saying what's good for you and what's not. The disclaimer is that the benefit of these is disputed by some, not all, experts, and also the tests can be circa £200-£300 by some providers. On the plus side, alot of people swear by them. I haven't done one myself.

[2] Manually keep a food diary and eliminate certain food groups one at a time (e.g. bread of any type, diary, gluten foods, etc.). Note how she feels before, then after, and reintroduce if wanted. This will take time!

[3] Follow something like the FODMAP diet. There's a good FODMAP app by FoodMaestro that can really help; e.g. you can scan most barcodes and it will tell you Red, Amber or Green. This FODMAP diet is mainly for those with IBS and other clinically diagnosed gut issues. This will take a longer time as it's more specific.

[4] Move around after eating. Eat little and often. Take Windeze to help with bloating. Drink lots of water!!

My daughter is both lactose and gluten intolerant.

It came on in her thirties.

My sister in law is lactose intolerant and it only started in her sixties.

You would be amazed at how many products contain lactose including some white wines and loads of over the counter medicines.

We tried to take lactose out of my wife's diet completely to see if it improved her MS and ended up having to do nearly all of her shopping in a specialist food and pharmaceutical store.

Is this White or Brown... or generally any bread?

Both or either. It is all down to the individual. Ave gone more to white bread and MissisT brown. Having said that I have cut down loads.
As Amanda says, keep a diary of all you are shovelling down your throat. Missis T started a slimming world diet at the start of the year. Basically it is eat fresh. She has lost weight ( 2 stones) and feels fitter for it.
Avoiding processed food is a massive step in the right direction.
Ave mentioned this before on here but a few decades back I had food allergies. I saw an alternative dr. He showed me a book E for additives. In it was something called compound benzoic acid. We used it in the medical centre for severe cases of athletes foot. Over time it rotted the dead skin off your feet. It is used in the brewing industry and as a food preservative. That’s what we put down our throats.

I was similar, so had allergy/intolerance testing done - found out that I was dairy intolerant to cows milk (molecules are too big and can't break them down properly). Since giving it up, have felt better and I can tell when I've had some as well, as get the same symptoms.
Do miss cheese but there are alternatives out there - have either oat or goat milk in tea/coffee/cereal

Pretty much all commercially available bread is pretty filthy stuff. I'd avoid it like the plague. The Chorleywood process has a lot to answer for.
I'd also avoid processed foods as much as possible .
I find the ZOE nutrition podcasts provide a decent walkthrough on up to date research in these matters. There's one on bloating -

My wife has to be careful with what she eats.
Nothing with seeds or skins, no green veggies and normal dairy products.
She has only lactose and fat free milk, plain chicken, bacon [oddly enough] and occasionally lamb.
Blooming nightmare eating out:mad:

I started using lactose milk and felt it improved my gut.
We both take Yakult which I would strongly recommend.
Toasted Danish bread only.
