statutary sick pay is £88.45p per week.
i have been os SSP since august ,and as such i am on my uppers big time.
i was informed that i could qualify for food bank vouchers and that i could get some food .
well today i went ,i was not sure what to expect and to be honest i felt like i was going cap in hand begging for food .let me tell you i never ever thought i would need help like this but im afraid its now become a needs must situation and i found myself walking through the doors of a food bank.
well i was surprised i can tell you.the people who are all volunteers were very helpful and not condescending at all like i thought they might have been ,in fact they were very understanding of my current state of affairs.

we were given a very good array of food enough to last at least four days worth ,we were also given some cat food as they asked if we had any pets .
i really cant praise the people enough and im definately going to be donating a carrier bag full of food every month once i get over my injury and im earning again.

food banks really do get the food to people who need it.
well they did in my case.

All the volunteers that I have come across are amazing people and it is good to hear your experience. Hope you make a speedy recovery.

I am fortunate enough to have only heard of food banks and not had to use them.
Sorry to hear of your plight but glad you had a positive result.
Best wishes and hope you return to full health in the near future.

Simple fact is that Food Banks shouldn't exist, the fact that they do means that the welfare system has broken down.

It needs fixing, people who are in genuine need, should have benefits that allow them to buy basic foodstuffs, end of.

I have some customers who have used one in Chesham and they say its funny how a small minority of people who use it can still find the cash for a 40 a day ciggy habit and other "substances". In their own words "Its poor people like them, that give poor people like us, a bad name"

To the OP, I can only wish you good luck and good health and hope you get back on track very soon

Phil i can assure you mate i am grateful for all the replies ,
i will say that i dont smoke and i dont drink .i now dont even have sky anymore as i have cancelled that .
i know what you are saying about the system ,but it is the system and unfortunatly you or i can do a lot about it
hopefully my knee injury will sort itself out but im not holding out a lot of hope in all honesty.
i have got to have an ultra scan just into the new year ,depending on the results from that it will decide wether or not i will need another operation on the knee.

We have a food bank at our fire station and it gets abused beyond belief. One eg was when a woman come in and took her food. Then straight to morisons to buy £10 of scratch cards

Sadly there will always be people who will abuse any system put in place, but don't ever let the few who abuse it stop you from helping the many genuinely in need.

You never know, the next person that needs their help could be you...

Can that really be true or is it anecdotal?
As an ex fireman good to know a firestation can still be able to help others.
Is this a Brigade policy or done by the watches?

Our new station is a "community '' station built under pfi
The charity get free storage of the twin external garages that we don't use. We have nothing to do with the food bank at all

Thanks, although I have no idea what a community fire station is.
Who followed the woman and saw her get lottery cards?
Sorry I still cannot believe this story.

Glad you got some help however more importantly I hope you make a recovery and get your health back.

I hope you soon get over what ails you. In your first post, I could hear the hurt you were feeling and cannot believe some of the replies on here.
