First time i've been to Europe with golf gear, and unlike America I now have to pay!

has anyone any experience with various budget airlines, and their cost/ process for golf clubs?

Pretty sure the last couple of years I've been away it's cost £35 to add a golf bag. Never had an issue, always been really easy and never had any problems with clubs breaking or anything like that. I've used Easyjet and Jet2 btw.

check with your airline directly as it'll be cheaper to book in advance.

Also I think there is a company that specialists in couriering clubs to your destination cheaper or as cheap as return airline charges.

Its less the airline and more the baggage handlers. I hade them destroy the hard-fabric carry case and stand bag I took to The Centurion for the Ping fitting opportunity twelve months ago because they hitched it onto the back of their trailer and dragged it along the tarmac because it had wheels rather than put it on the trailer with the rest of the luggage.

Friction burnt through the outer shell of the carry bag, wore a fist-sized hole in one of the pockets of the stand-bag itself and wore a hole in a waterproof jacket that was in the pocket.

Depends how desperate you are to use your own clubs, and if they have a branch at ther airport you are flying to, but I know a couple of people who have used these guys and said they had good quality clubs which worked out cheaper than taking their own. http://www.clubstohire.com/

If you are only going for a few days look at BA for flight cost and take your clubs as part of your allowance, it may work out similar or cheaper

Never had a problem but its pricey Ryanair was £100 return last year and Jet2 was £60 i think when we went to Portugal maybe better hiring clubs at the airport.

Yeah we did this. worked out a lot easier to use BA to portugal rather than paying £50 EW for the golf clubs with EastJet/Ryanair

I flew BA to Dubai last week and thought I got golf clubs in addition to my checked luggage. Forgot it was only on premium economy and above, so made my parents only take one case, I took one and then my clubs!
You can't split the allowance over two checked bags, but you can take a cabin size case plus a laptop size bag or rucksack on board, as well as a checked bag, I.e. your clubs. Check the weight restriction on hand luggage with BA as you may be able to do that for short trips (I'll be doing it in May).
Otherwise, use clubstohire, as they're great.

Hand luggage weight wih BA is 23kg

We flew with Easyject to spain last year and it was an extra £60 to take a golf bag however the bag had to weigh less than 20kg

I flew from Glasgow to Turkey last week with Thomas Cook. The flight was delayed for over two hours because the planbe was overloaded. One hundred and nine sets of clubs were booked on the flight, and a further twenty nine people turned up with clubs without booking them in advance. The handling agent checked them all in and charged those who arrived without pre-booking, an excess baggage charge. Once all the figures were collated the plane was almost one tonne overweight which resulted in the delay whilst baggage was offloaded, as was one of the flight attendants.
Three of our group of eight, who had pre-booked their clubs, arrived in Turkey to find they had no clubs or cases until the following morning, two hours before our first tee time!

Dozyjet charge more for clubs than for a suitcase of equivalent size, as a group of us discovered on check in after we had all prepaid for a case by mistake...
