Was up on the course the other night, generally knocking a couple of balls about in practise mode.
Had a tricky pitch over a bunker with a tight pin placement. Thought I'd have a go with a flop shot and it worked a treat.

Threw a few balls down and hit some more with very satisfying results.

The thing is, I had a similar shot in a competition last week and have to say I considered it but bottled it. Ended up trying to pitch over and ended up on the beach!

Anybody else tried and succeeded with a flop shot in competition? Or are you like me and just don't have the confidence to do it in pressure situations?
I imagine that given adequate practise there's no reason why you shouldn't play the shot in competitive circumstances.

He who Dares Basher ;)

Very handy shot to have in your locker if you've short sided yourself. Needs to be practiced so you get the feel for it but well worth the bother imo

I'ts having the bottle to hit it hard enough that takes some doing,no room for the faint heart.I usually take it on out of the rough if there is some grass under the ball, rarely from hard pan cos the bounce on the wedge can cause a thin. ;)

It depends how i am striking the ball if i am playing well i will take it on if not i will pitch out sideways as close to the pin as possible. If i hit the shot i will always try and go past the pin so i have a wider margin of error. quiet a difficult a shot really unless your on the 18th with a one shot lead in the club championship (then its really hard)

Indeed I do dare. I love them, use my 64 degree wedge, ball back in stance and rip through it. Dont always work out hence why im still off 16 but its fun.

DOH! I meant forward in my stance. Watching the Golf, drinking Magners, Listening to HID (honest) and typing on GM forum does not always produce the best results.

I keep trying them, no real problem getting them up in the air but distance control is a nightmare!

Hit one from the same place this week as last landed on the green last week, this week through the trees at the back??

I try them over bunkers with a level lip so if I thin it it usually hits the lip and goes forward :o

Ditto, Sat watching it also here on the notebook, nodding at the wife and typing here all while bouncing our youngest on my knee to keep her amused.

Produce one in the medal yesterday to perfection. Opened up the 60 degree wedge and my stance commited and swung. It popped up, missed the downslope and landed on the flat part of the green by the hole where I was aiming and stopped inches away to save par. Happy days.

I've got a 50 degree wedge that I use for flop shots. I love it. Crank her open, couple of practice swings to get the "feel" and then go for it. Just remember to stay down on it until after it's left the ground....one of the most satisfying shots in golf.

I'll use it when its the right shot to play and for the most part they work - there or thereabouts anyway.
Get one right - 100% right - and it feels as good as a 300 yard drive.
