My lad is going out to Australia on 1st October til 20th of October. For a pals wedding. He is on about having a look around re work ( Lorry driving class 1 over here).
I know it's gonna be more than a tenner. But ave never really looked for flights before. Been pointed towards sky scanner, but any other sites to peruse. He was looking to go from Manchester but are told him Heathrow or Birmingham may be an option.
Any advice greatly appreciated.

Expedia are pretty good.

Give Trailfinders a go. Go old fashioned, drop into one of their shops or ring them up. I used them for a flight to Brazil a couple of years ago and they undercut overyone else on the internet and the flight times were decent. You get to speak to a real person as well!

Always use sky scanner for my flights, but being from Belfast our options are reduced.

I have heard a number of people flying from Europe, like Amsterdam. And then booking a cheap £30 flight to Amsterdam. Seems to be a lot cheaper than booking it all under the one booking. I have to say I haven't tried this though and could be rubbish. Also the effort may not be worth it

One thing to bear in mind if you have not done long haul before. It is a slog, hard going. You want the most leg room you can afford, the most direct flights, the shortest connections etc. Going there is not a problem because you are excited but coming back these things matter, particularly coming back from Oz as you will go through the night at some stage. Price always matters but if the difference is small then pay the extra to get the benefits suggested. (I'm not suggesting business class but you can get a thing called premium economy that gives you more leg space for example)

I'd agree with this, I'd also think about where you are connecting, I've done the flight 3 times now, and always had good connections, and it's not been too bad - my in-laws went in September, and flew via Manila, with a 6hr stop over, and they said it was awful, poor facilities etc.

In terms of the stop over, you either need to go as short as possible, or actually stay somewhere overnight, my Brother left with his family the week before last, and for the first time they stayed a night in Abu Dhabi, he said it broke the trip up nicely.

Wilson - Imagine, half way through a night flight, let's say 3am-4am. You are in economy, you can't sleep, you can't get comfy. Your will is down, you are weak, you are starting to gibber slightly through fatigue. You have only snatched 15 minutes here or there. The attendents start an auction for a seat in business class. What would you pay? I hope I never encounter that as I suspect I would pay far more than is sensible. (I'd be rubbish under interrogation. Sleep deprivation breaks me in no time)

Head East, not West.
I went to NZ in 2009. Me & Mrs Slime went via Dubai, Bangkok & Sydney whereas my BIL went west & only stopped in LA.
He was toast for a week and me & Mrs Slime had no jet lag at all.
Reversing the journrey coming home had the same effect.
East out, west back.

Well he has booked it through etihad and the flight times are very good with a couple of hours change over in Singapore. Cheers boys for everything.

Does he get an upgrade as a City fan?

LT, spent a few hours in the bank today sorting out a few accounts, I dropped out to the girl who was helping us that he is off to Oz. She mentioned she had spent three years there and loved every minute. She said etihad airlines are fantastic.
We went home, he had a look, I got out of the bath half hour later and told him I could get him 10% off etihad bein a season ticket holder.
He said I have already booked it. Flippin kids.
