No driver this week for Lefty, he will use his Callaway XHot 3w wood off the tee & FIVE wedges.

So, for those of you who scoff at people carrying 4 wedges saying you should manufacture shots with the ones you have, would you criticise big Phill for taking out 5?

Surely the magician with a wedge in his hand is more than capable of opening and closing his clubs faces but obviously feels the need not to have to, if he can carry 5!

Discuss.....

Can we discuss the decision to leave the driver out of the bag too?

I didn't think he'd carried a driver since he had his new Phrankenwood made?

Besides, I'll be surprised if you see many drivers in use this week. The fairways are by all accounts baked solid, can see a lot off irons of the tee myself

Can't see the weather changing much up there so driver's going to be a redundant club.
If he can get 280 or more out if the 3w then fill the gap with a wedge.
It's going to be about staying out of the rough but it's also going to be about being able to get out of it when you go in it.
And with baked fairways and surrounds Phil's wedge work may hold the key.

So that's a P, S & L plus what!!!!

Last time I had 5 wedges in a bag I was at Nandos takeaway.......mmmmmm Nandos

Have him in the office sweep though so hope he's choosen wisely

The only thing that may stop that is if the wind gets up a bit - the 2 iron might not go far enough into the wind on some holes..

Can't see there being much to say about it really, most pro's won't be using a driver with the conditions anyway. It'll be a 3 wood or long iron all day everyday for most of them to keep it in play and with the run there won't be a loss of distance.

The wedges will be pretty much as Imurg states so most will be used for specific yardages of approach shots with the more loftier ones for his usual array of magic around the greens.

As to why Phil can and we shouldn't well he hits it a damn site further than us (well maybe not quite forum distance ) but has a damn site better touch than all of us and has the balls to pull of the shots we dream of.

Tiger and Rory both putting a new driver in play this week.................or not now with baked hard running fairways.........or maybe they will and be hitting wedges to all the greens:eek:

Tiger will hardly touch that Driver this week unless the wind gets up which doesn't look likely.

When you can open the face on a tight lie and flop it like phil then why not carry the 5. Is there anyone else on tour that comes close to him with imagination for a wedge shot?

Tigers now said he's getting 80-90 yds run with his 3 wood and only hit 2 drives so far this week.

Looks like the only place you'll see someone hit a driver this week is on the practice fairway

Talking of wedges, I have been seeing some pics of crazy grinds on wedges. I think Chris Wood is carrying two 60* with vastly different grinds on.

Same logic as many here!

Sure possible to manufacture shots.

But if there's a club that makes it significantly easier to do so, then there is definitely a case for using the 'specialist' club, if allowed.
