Hi guys

Does anyone do any kind of fitness or gym work to benefit they're golf? If so please advise!!!!

I look after myself but want to be in better condition before competition season starts up next year.

I have a phsical job as a plumbing and heating engineer so playing 18 mid week in the summer is sometimes hard work. I could have a cracking front nine but tend to suffer from fatigue on the last few holes.

Just wandered if anyone done any off course training?

I am still a fat git but since a health scare have been eating better and doing cardio exercise and swimming.

It has made a fantastic difference to my golf and after 18 on saturday, in the warm, I was totally fresh, indeed I went out and did another 18 yesterday, still fresh!

I do a fair bit of CardioVascular work, sit ups, press ups, stretching the back and legs; try and keep the core muscles strong and flexible;

i find it helps my game, psychologically or otherwise i dont know, but not feeling tired after 12 or 13 holes (i carry my clubs as well) certainly helps me get through the course focused.

not usually but the swimming will be coming back in the schedule over the winter, I do a mile each time. trouble is the adult session is friday night and I rarely felt like it after a late round.

My advice would be to PM HTL as he is a sports coach and would be able to give you specific pointers.

Good to see your recovery is going great guns and that you are actually seeing some real benefits to the new diet.

I have a few things I do but it depends on what equipment you have access to. Look on the titleist performance institute website they have some good exercise drills on there. I like to keep my body in shape anyway, but I do look to do a few golf related practices. If you have access to a 'powerplate' there is a great position for you to work your forearms and core at the same time- great for golf- I was going it tonight :D

Have you got a gym to train in or you training at home?

If you dont have a gym the link below is great it has all the exercises I would recommend.

When doing core exercises concentrate on rotation and a full range of motion. Also buy a resistance band, they are great for improving flexibility and strength.

When doing cardio dont just plod along on machines work to the correct heart rate. Follow link below to work it out and chose the appropriate zone to train in depended upon your goal.

Hope this helps? Anything else PM me or reply here.

Beware of doing too many weights, as this will really mess up your golf.

I do a bit of running for general fitness, a bit of rowing, some core work (very important for golf to have a strong core) and some light weights.

Just don't go mad for it.

Defo agree with Murph, My swing is constantly playing up due o my gym routine, some days I am fresh and swing great then other days I am as stiff as a dead badger and hook and slice the ball like a mad man (just like sat)

You've got heating and hot water? Next you will be telling us you have an indoor bog and a proper bathroom instead of the old tin bath in the kitchen.

Depends on your life style. Everyone can go to gyms and follow training regimes but you have to stick with them. I think its best to fit exercise in with your life style,(where golf is concerned) that suits the nature of the game. Physically, golf is one of the most unhealthy things for the body to do unless it is used to doing the things that golf reqires.Whatever you choose as a fitness regime you must include lots and lots of stretching exercise akin to golf, particularily as you get older.

Being simply fit, doesnt always protect you from wear and tear caused by golf.

Two days ago I watched 4 golfers get out of their cars, strait on the tee and away they went...not good! but its common.

In my view all golfers should go through a series of stretching exercises before playing and during the walk round the course and before each tee, this way you are fit to play and risk less injury, even the very fit can come a cropper as its usually the fit people who tend to give it a little more than is necessary so just as likely to snap something or pull something.

A short amble down fairways by many followed by sudden physical exertion not a natural use of muscles or body movement, followed by standing around all taking place over 3 to 5 hrs in varied weather conditions is not great for the body and to cope with it you need to be fit for it! not just fit.

Use a wii fit. Got one last week. Can't get the Mrs off it.
I've used it twice, 30 minute work outs and fun. I've not sweat this mush in years.
Also Yoga, good for balance = golf. Not easy either, I will no longer take the P*** out of people that do it again.

HTL, I exercise quite a bit, i've done half marathons raising money for Motor Neurone and doing Lonodn Marathon next year so im generally quite fit but can't seem to be making any progress on my core? I do sit ups loads, maybe 300/400 a week, is there anything else i should be doing?

Also, what about types of food? Its always something i've struggled on, i.e. knowing what i should.shouldn't be eating?
