Played the first 6 holes of my local today and walked off while standing on the 7th tee due to slow play, Soul destroying is the word I would use, even a 4 ball behind me was catching up with the 2 ball in front of me that was doing the deed. Searching for lost balls whilst not allowing those behind through and that was sometimes twice on the same hole, anyway good news was I was +1 after 6 holes.

I honestly can't understand some folk,If a group behind me are obviously playing quicker than me it would spoil my round knowing that I'm holding them up & that they're watching my every shot. Why people can't wave some one through is beyond me.

Agreed, I hate being rushed so would just let them through.

It's called ignorance

Did you ask to be let through? Not that you should have had too mind!! Bad form on their part either way !!!

Slow play by ignorant selfish players is killing golf as a sport.

I agree. And committees and the such like would be much better addressing this than worrying about if your shoe looks like a trainer, your shirt has come untucked or your sock is white enough.

So you were a Single? Many would say that that wasn't a great idea at the weekend.

You could have simply skipped a couple of holes, so that you were ahead of the 2-ball. Or were they being held up as well.

It's not always the ones immediately in front that are the cause!

No there were other 4balls in front of them all the way round but I
could see the other groups and not once did the2ball in front of me have to wait to take their shot they were too busy looking for the ball.

So they weren't actually the problem then. Though not letting you through might have been poor etiquette - depending on club policy when course is full.

I'm afraid you were simply the victim of bad timing/not having others to play with. If you were in a 4-ball, your pace of play would probably have been the same as everyone else.

I believe it's something the Pro Shop or whoever takes the booking should point out - that the round could be slow as there are likely to be 4-balls to slow you down. They could also point out any groups you might be able to join up with. When I book as a single, I always mention that I'm happy to join up with another group a reasonable time before or after my time.

And I've also found that if you catch them up on a tee and ask if you can join them, they will quite often actually offer to let you play through. If you join them for a couple of holes and they/you lose ground, you can also ask if they mind if you carry on as a single - even citing time constraints. Diplomacy works!

Don't worry, it'll get worse over the next couple of weeks with the Scottish Open and The Open taking place. You'll be lucky if it's just a fourball up front ;)

Could be worse you could have been playing a comp and pretty much had to stick it out!..

Played final round of our club champs yesterday 5hrs & 55minutes, I'd grown a beard by the time we'd finished! Cause of the issue was the club failing to close the course before the final round started, instead they let greens fees and swindles go out ahead of everyone. It was so bad we had to wait for 3 groups to finish the 2nd hole, and took 2hours to reach the 7th tee...

That is a complete joke! Final round of club champs and they let green fees and people not in the comp play before?

Course should be totally dedicated to the competition until finished/all teed off and well away then the scragglers can go out.

Unbelievable, Championship qualifying has the course closed to non competitors and we have the course closed on Finals day until all matches are finished.

Noticed this on other threads though, so it is not unusual. On any 'competition day' our course is closed to non competitors until after the last competitor has left the first green. No visitors, guests or members rollups out there in the middle of a comp.

My brother in laws stag do was this weekend and as my older brother was joining us we played a local council course.

I love golf and play a lot but it was the biggest waste of time. Chatting to a member about how shockingly slow it was he said why have 3 societies and a comp on at the same time I just couldn't believe it.

I was prepared for a slow day with the weather bringing out everyone for a game and I know everyone starts somewhere but after putting 4 balls oob in 40 yards you would think the bloke would pick up.

Sadly this is just one of the many things that has led me after 6 short months at a new club to consider moving on elsewhere without finishing the year and led me to play hardly any golf this year.. Not condusive to enjoyment or playing well...

Slow play is a killer for the game. In July medal Saturday me and my buddy were a two ball in amongst three balls. On 14th with buddy scoring well we both put our tee shots in not nice places. As we walked off the tee the group behind were approaching. I told them we were possibly both in trouble and that if our balls weren't almost immediately obvious we'd wave them through - so keep their eyes open for us waving. When we reached around where our balls should be it was immediately obvious that my buddy's was in the deep crap - so I immediately waved the group behind through. Easy.

That is an absolute shocker and unacceptable. Serious letters to committee on that one.
