Sitting on the train at Glasgow Queen Street this evening awaiting it's departure along with everyone else on the train (all seats full on the carriage) when a "conductor" comes down 30 seconds before departure to tell us that "the carriage has no lights, so everyone will need to move out of the carriage and in to cars 2 and 4" (either side), which were also both full....
I asked why we had to move and was advised "the carriage has no lights sir. It's for safety as you could fall in the dark"...
"But it's daylight outside" I stated.... "But we go through a tunnel when we leave the station" He said
Ok, plausible, so I tried a little more reasoning... "The tunnel is 30 seconds of a 31 minute journey AND everyone is sitting down, it's quite hard to fall over"
"Ah but the rules say we have to move you in to the other carriages for safety sir".
I tried one last attempt at reason but was becoming tetchy (apologies to that fine conductor)... "So, let me get this straight Malcolm (his name wasn't Malcolm but it should have been), you are telling me that, in terms of SAFETY, you think that it's reasonable that the same amount of people that filled an entire car now standing in a space much smaller and on a moving train which will sway back and forth IS ACTUALLY SAFER THAN SITTING IN THE DARK FOR 30 SECONDS????""
The answer... "Yes sir, those are the rules"...
"I know, you said, but do YOU think it's logical?" I asked... "Yes sir, those are the rules..."
Is it just me or is there something lacking in the thinking that goes in to corporate rulings?
I witnessed no less than 20 people stumble into, or in two cases ON TO, other people during that journey.
We experienced 33 seconds (yes, I timed it) of tunnel induced darkness. Oh yes, and the train was now 15 minutes late.
Idiocy 1, common sense and logic 0. Home Win!

Phew, sorry all just had to get that off my chest...
