Sitting on the train at Glasgow Queen Street this evening awaiting it's departure along with everyone else on the train (all seats full on the carriage) when a "conductor" comes down 30 seconds before departure to tell us that "the carriage has no lights, so everyone will need to move out of the carriage and in to cars 2 and 4" (either side), which were also both full....

I asked why we had to move and was advised "the carriage has no lights sir. It's for safety as you could fall in the dark"...
"But it's daylight outside" I stated.... "But we go through a tunnel when we leave the station" He said
Ok, plausible, so I tried a little more reasoning... "The tunnel is 30 seconds of a 31 minute journey AND everyone is sitting down, it's quite hard to fall over"
"Ah but the rules say we have to move you in to the other carriages for safety sir".

I tried one last attempt at reason but was becoming tetchy (apologies to that fine conductor)... "So, let me get this straight Malcolm (his name wasn't Malcolm but it should have been), you are telling me that, in terms of SAFETY, you think that it's reasonable that the same amount of people that filled an entire car now standing in a space much smaller and on a moving train which will sway back and forth IS ACTUALLY SAFER THAN SITTING IN THE DARK FOR 30 SECONDS????""

The answer... "Yes sir, those are the rules"...
"I know, you said, but do YOU think it's logical?" I asked... "Yes sir, those are the rules..."

Is it just me or is there something lacking in the thinking that goes in to corporate rulings?
I witnessed no less than 20 people stumble into, or in two cases ON TO, other people during that journey.
We experienced 33 seconds (yes, I timed it) of tunnel induced darkness. Oh yes, and the train was now 15 minutes late.
Idiocy 1, common sense and logic 0. Home Win!

:rant::rant:

Phew, sorry all just had to get that off my chest...

Your lucky it wasn't one of the other guards who would have then had the train cancelled for over crowding . I've had this many times and get it in the neck too but health and safety rules are rules and have to be followed

The conductor was carrying out company policy probably brought in because a passenger had sued the company when they broke a nail in a similar situation. Blame her not the company.

Scotrail have an overcrowding policy??? Seriously?

I've been on trains like the black hole of Calcutta!

Not in any way agreeing with what they did just saying why the probably did it.

My former secretary's husband was the H&S officer responsible for the Bristol to London line at the time of the Clapham crash.
Really messed up his life.

A few weeks ago Radio 5 interviewed a lady from the HSE, and she claimed that workplaces used H&S as a sort of catch-all excuse for all sorts of ridiculous rules they had invented, when in fact it's nothing to do with the HSE whatsoever.

It seems a very convenient line for anyone making rules up, that they know will not broken no matter how much they are questioned.

Loads of H&S myths have been busted.
People are so keen to pick up on the stories.
Best one was the Headmaster who banned conkers [supposedly].
Traveled the world that one and quite a few other headmasters followed his 'lead'.

Old thread revived as I had to laugh coming home tonight. Same 1711 service Queen Street to Carnoustie... No lights on in the carriage and not one person batted an eyelid. No one told us we had to move due to Alf & Safety, no the train just pulled out of the station as normal and we endured the 33 seconds of complete darkness (save the mobile, ipad and kindle screen lights) before emerging in to the bright sunlight...

Scotrail, I salute you and your annoyingly inconsistently applied rules without added logic.

No real point to this, just made me laugh.

I see a different tone in your first and recent post Greig:thup: you're obviously happier in your new job:whoo:
