The first comp thread got me thinking, tomorrow I’m playing my first round in 5 years where nothing’s on the line

It’s not a comp or a scored social round (all witnessed scored rounds as well as comps can be attributed to handicap and also carry side-bets within our group)

Basically tomorrow, within reason, I can do what I want as it’s just me and a mate (who wants to practice with his new driver)

What do I practice to get the most out of this round (the obvious part being areas I know I’m weaker at)

Is playing two balls all the way round the way to go or is it better to play one ball and save that time in order to drop 2 or 3 balls at various points when a shot scenario presents itself

What aspect of a practice round do you find most useful ?

Naturally we will be conscious of pace and any following groups and care of the course

When you get to a scenario where there's a safe and a dodgy option, try both.
Try shots you wouldn't normally play just to see if you can play them. There might be a time when you need to..

I would say, play one ball for most of the time and just drop the occasional second ball when you want to try something, like for example when you did not get a good strike, but want to make sure that your club selection was the right one. Even if it is just a practice round for you, there might be other people out on the course as well, and you don't want to hold them up. Also, even though I do play 2 balls on our practice course quite often, I think doing it for a full round on a real course for a ful 18 holes would be quite exhausting.

Why should it be any different to other rounds?

Tee up one ball, try your best. Why practice things you won't use in competition?

You do have a little liberty to take a little more risk but don't take overtly high risks for the sake of it, that's just bad pracice.

If you haven't worked on the shot off the course, don't try it on it for the first time!

Why? Isn't this exactly the time to experiment a bit and try some different things?

Other than scramble comps I never get to take on higher risk shots so I've no plans to practice that aspect, but its such a rare opportunity I'm not going to just play a round to the RoG with a single ball in play

The complete opposite of this......just go out and have fun trying new things. Lots of it won't come off but who cares?

are you talking about just a bounce game or a round on another course to get the feel of the course?

if its just a knock around your home track, and just a mess around. Try playing worst ball. play 2 balls and only use the worst to play the next shot from. i tend to do that if i just go for a few holes .

Sounds like an idea, might well do that on some holes, ta
