ok, so i was talked into signing up for my first comp, saturday after next. now, the 2 guys that i felt happy with going out, now cant make it!! so, it was either bottle it or crack on. im just gunna crack on, but the problem is i dont really have much of a clue. my usual playing partner Matt was going to show me the ropes, but now were not playing untill the pairs comp the week after.
so how does it all work with marking cards etc? does 1 person do it for the group or what? any other tips?

first of all relax and enjoy it, thats the most important bit, its only a friendly game of golf still!!

you will all swap cards on the first tee so you mark someone elses card. you mark your score in marker and their score in player a column.

other than that be ready when its your turn and try and be courtious, if i was you id tell the guys on the first tee its your first comp and could they help you out where they think you need it.

enjoy!

thank you. naturally im a bit nervous, but thats normal. so there its of as 3-balls, so we each mark another person. do we rely on that person to tell us the score or do we have to count their shots as well?

exactly as fundy said mate , tell the guys it your 1st comp & they will see you right, its only a game win or loose nothing changes cept your handicap, enjoy & make sure & let us know how you go

Go for it. I find my game usually improves when I'm playing with new partners. It kind of eradicates the complacency from ny swing, particularly my driving.

I'm really glad I found this thread as I'm in a similar boat myself. I recently got my handicap sorted out and want to now get on and play in some comps. There's a medal coming up shortly that I fancy playing in and the advice above has been great, as I've been wondering some of the same things as the elliottlale.

Do I mark the two guys I'm playing with in the player A and B boxes or do I just mark for one of them (ie just player A)?

There's a box for the markers score on the card which is obviously for my score, so I guess I don't put my score down in any of the A, B or C boxes also?

Thanks, I don't want to make an @rse of myself on the day, or upset any of my playing partners. I'm sure I'll have more daft questions between now and the day, so apologies in advance. :o

You normally all swap cards and so you'll be responsible for just the card of the player you swap with. In a medal you just need to make sure you mark his GROSS score in player A column and keep a track of yours in the marker column. If it were stableford you'd still mark the gross score but then put the point tally (based on net e.g.4 nett 3 on a par 4 = 3 points) in the point line.

Some players don't like to know how they are doing after nine so my advice would be to count the total and keep it to yourself unless he asks to confirm it with you. At the end add it all up, take off the handicap and put it in the nett score box. Sign his card as the marker and make sure you sign your own. Housekeeping might include putting the tee time on, which tees you used and making sure the handicap (and shots) are marked at the top too.

Excellent Homer, thanks very much :)

So would I fill in the player A box with my own name and handicap etc, then give that card to one of the other two players to mark for me?

We get our cards from the pro shop when we sign in and they are filled in. If yours aren't then you will put yourself down as Player A and mark your handicap and shots next to your name. Remember to fill in the start time and the tees used too. Swap it with one of your partners on the tee and just mark his score in Player A and yours in the markers. If you have any doubt about anything ask. Most will be only too willing to help

Cheers again Homer. That makes perfect sense, thanks.

What goes in the strokes received box? Is that the same figure as my handicap or something else?

There's nowhere obvious to mark which tees are used though.
