So after a 6 month break from the game I played my first medal of the year yesterday.

I was looking forward to it as the weather was perfect and from the two practice rounds in previous days I thought I had some cause for optimism. I had been playing some good shots, even some cracking pitches and chips (very rare for me) and thought I might get into the buffer zone at least.

Well, what can I say? After hitting two nice shots into the first hole I proceeded to four putt from nowhere. Great start, I thought.

I didn't get on in regulation at the 2nd hole (a par 5) and was putting from just off the green. Bogie. 3 over after 3 and half the handicap gone already.

However, I hadn't been hitting the ball badly so far and racked up 5 regulation pars in a row. So I had some hope of reaching the turn on my handicap goal of +3 if I just played the next two holes sensibly.

I pulled an 8 iron off the tee on the par 3 8th hole down onto the 9th tee. It was a tricky shot and I managed to flub the first 2 pitches and roll off the hole with a treble bogie 6. Aaarrgggh.

Just to add insult to injury I then 3 putted the 9th for a bogie. Out in 42 (+7). I had hit 7 of the 9 greens in regulation.

:(

By this time I had lost the will to live and after my first bad drive of the day I racked up another treble on the 10th after another 3 putt and double bogied the 11th after missing the green and flubbing another chip. I NR'd on the 14th, having lost the plot completely.

Just shows how one hole can throw your game out completely.

Lesson booked for Thursday.

I don't suppose it will help but just in case... have a look at the link in the Slider or Digger thread. There's a couple of stories on there of guys struggling with their short game until they found the right way to chip "for them".

Cheers. Had a wee look. Makes for interesting reading.

I have to say that one good thing about not having played for six months is that I'm giving myself a chance to "re-boot" a couple of things about my game.

Firstly I've made a determined effort not to revert to a couple of old bad habits. I had a few chipping lessons towards the end of last season and I'm sticking to those principals rather than reverting to the way I've been chipping for the last 8 years (which was just technically incorrect).

Even in the 3 rounds I've played so far in the last week I've played a few of the best pitches and chips I've hit in 10 years, shots I could only dream about a while back. Once the technique beds in I'm sure I'll have a bit more confidence and won't be so daunted about those more difficult shots.

I've even reverted to putting conventionally rather than back-handed. I'll see how that goes.
