So after too many 'out of the blue' disasterous collapses of ability to hit a ball over the last couple of years I have my first lesson in 25yrs this lunchtime - and only my second in my golfing life (of 40+ yrs). It's a half hour 'review'/'let's have a look' lesson; and it's silly I know but I'm nervous. Ass Pro doing the review lesson has been supportive as I've explained my concerns. He's never seen me hit a ball but knows I'm not bad. I've been wondering what he'll think - what he'll say. But hey - my golf swing today is what it is. I look forward to him pointing out that obvious thing I thought I was doing but am not - or the thing I am doing but shouldn't be. And you never know.

I shall report back on my thoughts.

Chances are that he'll comment on lots of different things.

You need to be open an honest with him with regards to what you want to get out of today. Are you prepared to go on a long course of lessons to fix all the faults he finds? Are you prepared to struggle while you bed these new moves in?

If not, then it may be better to tell him and he'll most likely tell you your main fault, prescribe a drill, tell you that you're good and let you go on your way.

Either way is more effective than going alone, in my opinion.

And.... after 25 years, no wonder you're nervous! Good luck and enjoy!!!

Hogan...I think you will be like me when I had a lesson after about a 10 year semi break.
Good solid stuff with minor tweaking, remember to do as you are told!!!

I am on old links player and tend to drop my hands a bit.
Felt awkward to play with higher hands but the better shots came pretty quick. Just have to keep reminding myself every now and again.

I worked for a while with a guy of 67-68 years old. Used to play with a huge slice off the tee, and would duff 1 of every 3 irons. Solid 16 handicap, would play to within 4-5 shots of it every week.

Went for his first lesson in decades, now hits his drives with a gentle draw, much more consistent strike on the irons - scoring a lot better than ever before!

Don't think he plays enough anymore to affect the handicap, but his retirement is looming and I dare say he'll end up knocking a few shots off his 16 HC.

good man - for doing this as well.

I'm nervous waiting for your report!

See @FairwayDodger - Desperation. Had to cancel lesson :( But will reschedule asap.

BTW @DfT your

absolutely rings bells with me. I do play with my hands low (probably too low) and play a links game - everywhere - and often commented upon by others. I tried raising my hands a bit at the weekend - it felt really weird - but did seem to make a difference - until I went double-LL. Maybe I forgot what I had been doing to that point - though acvtually I think I may have raised them too much and became very conscious of them. So hands might simply be the answer.
