Sniffy's comment about "refusing to play with anyone who uses castle tees" (a jest I hope) made me wonder...

Has anyone really truly refused to play with someone based on their first tee impression?

I've had a few "heart sink" moments, especially when paired up with randoms on resort courses, but the strangest was when we were paired with another couple in Canada.

We got out of our buggies to introduce ourselves at the first tee, and I noticed that the woman was wearing flip flops.
But there were also 2 bags on the cart, so she was obviously not the "wife just along to watch"

My prejudice about "none of the gear, no idea" was quashed when she proceeded to nail her opening drive 20 yards past mine!

Turns out that she had very bad arthritis in her feet and the only shoes she could wear in comfort were her flip flops.
I wonder how this would go down at some clubs in UK...

Two of us played in a four man team charity event a couple of years ago and asked to be allocated two partners. On the tee the bloke told us he'd played a couple of rounds & his wife announced that this would be her first 18 holes. And this at Rockliff Hall, 7,800 yards off the back tees. The lady proceeded to score 1 point during the round, failing to score when receiving 2 shots on a 120 yard par 3. While there I bumped into two of my fellow club members. They'd been paired with a lady who was playing on a proper golf course for the first time. The four of us made arrangements there & then to enter as a team the following year.

To say our hearts sank when we met our other team members on the first tee is an understatement.

its works both ways though!

Filled in for a a drop out at a match we have against a local club, shotgun start. I got to the tee to see the 3 guys i was playing with and they announced there handicaps... 22,22 and 25 my heart sank... the oppo asked mine... 6... you could see there's did too;)

Didnt refuse to play with the guy but ..

Played in a junior scratch cup in Lough Erne last year with 3 strangers , 2 of the guys knew each other ..
The starter was as polite and friendly as could be , welcoming us , gave a bit of advice re the course and wished us well etc ..

The starter then asked us to identify our golf balls to him and each other before we tee off ,(i know its not a requirement but the guy had been so nice & professional 3 of us did so no bother ) 1 guy Snapped NO its got nothing to do wit you..

First impression wasnt great , turned out he wasnt too bad to play with so maybe first impressions can be wrong ..

The fact we nearly got into a boxing match with the group in front of us on the 11th fairway summed the day up nicely ha ..

Offered to play with guy at work who I'd only really just met - air shot on first, followed by a nobble not reaching the ladies tee - OMG, thought I, this is going to be a long round.

Got better through rest of round although not seen anyone before or since score so well with a 60 yard slice on every shot regardless of club or distance it seemed!

Don't quite get this, isn't the point of the handicapping system so that we can all play the game together, and enjoy it?

Happy to play with anyone and try not to form an opinion on the first tee. Been caught out before being paired with the scruffiest looking gent, with beat up gear who announced he'd not played for a while. Formed the mindset (says more about my own preconceptions) that this could be messy, but he played wonderfully for 38 points and was great company. I now try and be more open minded and will go out with anyone who wants a game. After four hours in their company I can then decide much more rationally if its an experience I'd choose to repeat on another occasion

I'm sure I have made blokes' heart sink when they have arrived on tee to find they are paired with me!

Middle aged woman, clubs seen better days, wearing more pink than Katie Price, and frequently shoes looking scruffy

I'll play with anyone.......once

I did play with a guy who- I kid you not - would take 3 practice swings for every shot and take large divots everytime:eek::eek:

Started of smirking then it was just plain embarrassing and when I said to him he said "I'm allowed practice swings and I replace the divots"
he's not wrong but I never played with him again but some still do....regularly:eek:

I don't know why makers of women's golf clothing and equipment are convinced we all want to look like we are auditioning for My Little Pony.

My first set of clubs had flowers on them FFS!

Just lazy, I think. Too often in a golf shop you can look at the women's clothing from across the room and know its not even worth the effort of wandering over for a closer look.

my 'mens' shafts all have flowers on them- looks adorable;)

I used to play scratch league matches with a 60 year old 5'4'' tall farrier.
His hands were disfigured through his work so he had a very strange set up and grip.
His longest drive struggled to reach 200 yards and he used a 5 wood for anything over 150 yards.
He played off 5 handicap and had a short game that you would give your right arm for.

We won most of our matches as the impression he gave to the opponents on the first tee was worth a 3 up start.
