Just a quick question for my playing partner...

He received his first ever HCP a few weeks back and was given 13.3 I was under the illusion that .anything was impossible for a first time handicap???

Think most clubs go for a round figure but I don't think it's unheard off, 13.3 gives him a couple of comps before he goes to 14 or he settles in the 13 nicely. Good 1st handicap

If this was genuinely the first time he had been allocated a handicap then it was wrong to allocate anything other than a whole number - the CONGU manual is absolutely clear on this. Perhaps an initial award of 13 suggests that this wasn't his first handicap and that there was previous history.

I did argue the toss with the guy on reception who gave him his handicap but he claims that is what the system came up with and looked at me like I was crazy for suggesting a .something was impossible...

I was given a handicap of 24.4 when I got my 1st handicap about 8 years ago.

Nope he started playing with me 2 and a bit years ago and wasn't going to ever bother with a HCP until I had played a few comps and he wanted in on the action. This is our first ever year being members of any club. I've been best mates with him since we where 10 so no secret golfing history for him lol

If he has been playing a couple of years then it is not impossible that he could get a 13 handicap. I'm sure if I had waited a couple of years to get my first handicap it would have been in the mid teens. My first was 24, but I had only been playing golf 3 months.

Ermmmm not really anything to do with the OP go and av Another look

Fair point Davey. Just noticed the . before the anything. I thought you were referring to the fact of how low it was for a first handicap.

LOL no worries and your right his handicap would have been higher if he had handed his cards in at the beginning. Oh well it will all level out eventually.

It's another case of a Club not doing things properly.
This, and other things that contravene the "Handbooks", are happening all over the Country all the time.

I think there is very little control in the Club Amateur game at the moment.

Just adding fuel to the fire

I was given an initial handicap of 26.4 after submitting my 3 cards (never been a member or had a handicap before)

I agree, CONGU are very clear on this and you would think that those responsible for allocating handicaps would also be very clear. As you say however, I doubt this is the only thing that gets done incorrectly in Club Golf. There are too many people in charge who either don't know the rules or decide to do things differently because they don't agree with them.
