Played Friday to get my final card in and shot 97, which is about par for me give ro take 3 shots (SSS is 69).

Played fairly well, and was expecting a handicap of around 26-28, which is probably about right for me. I had only one hole worse than a double bogey in my 97, which was the best card I put in.

So I turn up yesterday having been told to put my name down for the competition - I was playing off 18! Madness!

Now for the twist though - we only won the comp! Admittedly it was a Texas Scramble, and I was playing with a couple of really good players, but was ecstatic to have won the first comp I'd entered.

Had a word with the handicap scretary afterwards and they've put me back up to 22 as well - hopefully I can start playing to that very soon. For now, very happy to have a 100% record in club competitions! :D

That handicap seems a bit harsh, unless your game improves dramatically it will take a while and plenty of comps to get to your correct handicap.

Is it a winter layout you are playing - most clubs operate 2/3rds or 3/4 handicaps over the winter? Considering the highest you could get awarded is 28, and from your post a handicap of 27 would sound right - it could just be off season your off the lower and will go up come the start of the season? All depends on the course setup for that theory to run true though.

At least off 22 there is a bit of room to move if oyu are having a bad day. My advice would be to play every hole as a par 5 (gross 90 nett 68). That way it will stop you trying to force yourself to get onto the longer par 4's and get you use to using your shots. It gives you some freedom on the par 3's and if you par a couple of those you have a few extra shots in the kitty to still hit your target.
