First golf holiday - any travel tips re the clubs?

I put a broom handle in the bag, next to my driver.
That way if the bag gets thrown onto it's top end, by baggage handlers, it should have something longer than the driver which should hit the tarmac first.
I also put my socks over my irons and lightweight clothing in and around the club heads for added protection.

Done it many times with no trouble. Put all of your golf stuff and even liquids, shoes, equipment etc., in the golf travel bag. They never seem to check the weight with those. Either that or they're not bothered if it's heavier.
Put a couple of towels over the club heads for extra padding.
Put a pad lock on the travel bag.

Happy days!

Check with the airline web site as some are now checking the travel bag contents closely, even restricting the amount of golf balls you can carry. I always carry an extending ball retriever in an old head cover set to a height at least 3 inches longer than the driver. Exactly the same idea as the brush handle as it protects from end on impact. Put shoes in a bag and then out them either side of the club heads and wrap the gaps with towels, socks, underwear as extra protection for the clubs.Give yourself an extra few minutes for the check in for outsize baggage as they are usually a long way from the usual check in facilities. Your bag will be x rayed so don't carry electrical equipment or charger cables in there as this will definitely result in a full check of the contents.( made this mistake once, never again) Don't forget that clothes can also be rolled and stored in the side pockets of golf bags to maximise allowance. Many airlines have a 20kg limit on golf equipment.I carry extra golf balls in my hand luggage as these are rarely checked for weight and they are a heavy commodity if stored in hold luggage. ENJOY YOUR BREAK.

I know of someone who had to dispose of a box full of Pro V1s at security because they wouldn't allow them in his hand luggage - apparently they could be used as weapons during the flight

Off to Spain next week. I have travel bag for my clubs. (soft not hard)

One piece of hand luggage (EasyJet :()

Coincidentally , I am off to Spain on Sunday for a golf trip (first in Spain). I have flown to Scotland with clubs many times and never had any problems with damage to clubs. I do tend to pack the top with towels and it is the one time I use head covers for the irons.

Hope the weather is kind to you.

really interesting point.I must have just been lucky. Pro V1's are too expensive for me to use as ammunition, even on a golf course!

If the head will come off your driver take it off and stick it in a side pocket. Don't forget to put tool in your bag. Make sure you have shorts and light tee shirts.

1 - Apply suntan lotion a couple of hours before you play, don't miss any exposed bits then wash your hands, I found out the hard way

2 - The night before your game don't stay in the pub till the early hours, remember have a few bottles of juice or water in your bag, I found out the hard way :D

3- Book a late dinner , because it will probably be a long round, , I found out the hard way :D

4 - Don't fall out with any of your European FCs , so easily done . :D

As with all luggage, do NOT put your home address in the bag (they don't need to know where your empty home is)...put your email address/phone contact and destination address.
My "broomstick" is a photo MONOpod that I extend to the length of the fairway woods....and like Tashy, I bought a driver with a removable head that goes in the side pocket.
I wrap my rain jacket around the tops of the clubs.

This is hilarious, baggage handlers all over the world have teams of crooks sitting in UK towns just waiting for a list of empty addresses.

Luckily I've travelled quite extensively with golf clubs and i've never experienced any issues. They've always been weighed at check in, even with flagship airlines and low cost ones. Emirates even tried to charge me for being over weight but my cute smile got me of that. My bags has never been checked for it's contents, in my view anyway. I always wrap a couple of towels over and around the clubs heads, put my golf shoes ans trainers in there too and any clothes I can for extra protection. It is my experience that with most airlines and I've flown with lots that as long as your checked in luggage and golf bags are under the weight limit you can have anything you want in them. I'm flying next month with Ethiad with clubs and they are quoting on their site i have 35kg of luggage that I can split between as many bags as I need.

I normally use a soft travel cover and so far never had any problems. Since the cover is a lot bigger than my bag, I use fleece jackets, trousers, rain gear, towels etc. to cushion the clubs as good as possible. Normally all my shoes (not just the golf shoes) go into the travel cover as well, saving me room in the hand luggage. And don't forget to put all your liquids (sun lotion etc.) into the travel cover as well, as those will only be allowed in checked luggage. I had to give up mine last time, because I forgot, and it was a bit of a bother to buy replacements at my destination, because the hotel was located in the middle of nowhere and all the tourist shops were still closed because it was off season.

Once you have collected your clubs the other end from the belt or out of gauge area check them. Not just visually, take the bag out and check the clubs for any damage. Airline won't pay out if you're at the first tee discovering a broken shaft. Always check at the airport, that 5 mins could save a lot of money.

Plenty of good advice in there...

I also use bubble wrap round the heard of the irons, I put 3 together with bubble wrap in between the heads and then elastic bands to heads together, then another on the grip end. Towels around the woods...

Great ideal bout removing the driver head! Why did I never think of that!

Clubstohire.com are great, if they have what you want... mainly TM and Callaway. (No Ping yet!) My wife uses them regularly... I tend to take my clubs!

Don't waste time wrapping towels and bubble wrap around your club heads. I just wrap all my golf clothing around them to leave more room in my luggage. I use a soft travel bag too and have forged clubs, but I've never had a problem with damage to my clubs.
