Hi fellas,

I am going round with the club pro next wednesday for my handicap certificate.

Im pretty nervous but looking forward too see how it goes. I was hoping someone could offer some advice as everyone who has a handicap has been there?

Thanks SB

No need at all for nerves. The pro has seen better golfers than you and he's seen worse golfers than you so no worries on that score. Hopefully your pro might give you some tips about the course and you can use the opportunity to learn and to watch a pro close up and first hand. Enjoy your game and treat it as a normal game with a friend.

When I got my handicap I was not asked to go round with the pro, we just had to get 3 cards signed.

As has been said, no pressure, you will get the handicap you get, its just a start point. Mine was too low for my when I got it I think, now I guard it a bit for ego reasons.

That's a strange way to get a handicap certificate, most clubs you have to put 3 cards in.

Just enjoy yourself, he may just be checking on your etiquette.

It is a DeVere Club therefore membership, I dont think it has the exclusivity of a private club if that changes things?

I am playing in a comp a week on sunday and thought you must have a handicap to enter?!?!

Im confused.....

Here we go, C&P from the CONGU website.

Q.1 How do I obtain a handicap?

A.1 A CONGU® Unified Handicap can be allotted only to a Member of a golf club that is affiliated, as defined, to a National Union. To obtain a handicap a player is required to submit a number of cards over 18 holes at his Home Club (preferably over a Measured Course), in such a manner as his Home Club specifies, but not less than three. Each card must be signed by a responsible person acceptable to the Handicap Committee. Any score of 2 over par for men and 3 over par for ladies shall be amended to 2 [3] over par respectively. After these adjustments have been made an Exact Handicap (whole number) should be allotted equivalent to the number of strokes by which the best of the submitted cards differs from the Standard Scratch Score.

As regards playing in a comp, you won't be able to win without a handicap, but you might be able to use this as one of your 3 cards.

Not a problem. As mentioned above, your secretary will just look on it as one of your 3 qualifying cards.
When you meet up with the guys you are playing with, just mention you are a new member and won't be taking an active part in the competition but just require one of them to mark your card for handicapping purposes. They should understand and it shouldn't cause a problem.
Then just settle down, enjoy the round, watch and (hopefully) learn!!
Good luck with the game with the pro. Should be a good experience for you and you will learn a lot from him with regard etiquette and how to go about things.
This game seems daunting at first. But it's not.
