Hello all,

i have aver just registered on here as I'm a newbie to golf.
i have recently purchased my first new set of clubs which are the nike slingshot irons.

im looking to purchase my first new driver, currently using a ping G5 13.5 degree which was given to me.

i have a big left to right off the tee so was looking for something maybe abit forgiving.

there are 2 which I have looked at.....

- taylormade R1
- nike covert

would any of these be suitable for me?

i would be very interested to know any thoughts on here please.

thanks for reading

matt

You'll get lots of different suggestions but you'll probably not get anything much more forgiving than your current driver.

Get yourself down to a local pro that has demo clubs and try out a few drivers until you find one that suits you. Not the most glamorous advice you'll get but unless you're ready to go for a full custom fit then probably your best bet.

Indeed nothing wrong with the G5 at all. Sounds like the swing fault most new golfers suffer from the left to right slice. Get your swing sorted first as the others you mention will still bring the same results.

Or probably better advice would be to spend your money on lessons with a decent teaching pro who will be able to show you why you have a big left to right on your drive. And hopefully fix that for you before you invest in a new driver.

Welcome onto the madhouse :D unfortunately I can be of no help as I'm just as bad! My tip is leave it for the range and work on it there.

Yup, as others have said - lessons are the best investment. If you slice with one driver, you'll like slice with the next.

That said, I had a Ping G15 'draw' which was slightly offset and had a regular shaft. Neigh on impossible to slice that thing! Should be able to find relatively cheaply and worth a punt, rather than investing £100+ in an R1 or Covert.

Welcome to the forum, stick around for a while. 13.5 degree driver in winter is ideal as you won't be getting much run, like others have said invest £30-50 on a lesson and you will be surprised at your results, I had my 1st lesson last week for over 12 years and it's the best £30 I have spent in a long time.

Give it to me JimBob - I can slice anything!

To the OP - welcome!
It will be worth getting the G5 checked out by the Pro as well.
If you need a regular shaft and the fitted one is stiff - or vice versa - then it may not suit.

I personally wouldn't recommend either the R1 or Nike

Certainly visit a pro but also look at some second hand drivers - K15 was very forgiving

Welcomr to the forum - and to golf!

Yet another to recommend sticking with the G5.

Not the latest model, but certainly not outdated and plenty forgiving. The loft is probably suitable for you as well.

Spend some of the money 'saved' on a course of lessons with a reputable Pro asap. If you get the basics right early, you'll have fewer bad habits to correct! The Pro should be able to tell if the clubs are unsuitable but, from memory, the Slingshots should be fine. Golf can be extremely expensive to start, so it makes sense to not go overboard initially with gear initially. I believe it's worth finding a putter that you get on with, though again don't go overboard - the performance difference between a 'value' one and 'range-topping' is marginal but the price difference can be huge! One you feel comfortable with and feel you can sink putts with is the key!

Good luck

Thank you for your replies.
i am also looking to invest in a new putter so will have to visit the american golf shop in the next town.

I know my grip will party be the reason of my left to right but i really dont feel comfortable holding a club how your meant to. Mine is more like a baseball grip and my hands dont lock or overlap at all.

I dont have many pros in my area and guess it wont show by hitting a driver in the shops virtual net.

Where abouts is your area mate ?

Must be somebody you can see? Whereabouts you from? Some people can play with the baseball grip, not something I could get on with but some can, swing path will be an issue as well I would hazard a guess you are coming over the top in the downswing. Need to get it sorted mate otherwise it will always be there and you will get no consistency

Welcome to the forum, this is a great place for knowledge and a good laugh.

Do not buy anything else before you get lessons. A massive slice will only be caused by yourself and not your clubs, trust me im going through the same problem.

Best advice you will get.

Welcome to the forum of die hard golfers mate. Where are you from?

Stick wIth the G5 for now, a few years old shows serve you well.Use the money for lessons then get properly fitted for driver.so many drivers on the market get some advice from your pro.
Most of all enjoy the game, see if their are any forumers nearby where you arrange a game.

Best of luck.

I live in Leamington Spa.
We dont have any golf shops.
Have 2 courses, one is members only and the other is pay and play but has no driving range or putting green.

I just dont like the thought of finding a pro as i know they will try and change my grip. Ive tried holding a club many different ways at home but just doesnt feel good at all.
