After being accepted into the club a week or two ago, went down today for my first game as a member. Gawd knows why, but it was nerve-racking on the first tee - and I promtly duffed my first ever "members tee shot" into the bushes just in front of the ladies tee. And then couldn't hit the ball for toffee for about the next 4-5 holes

Shouldn't have been bothered at all since the folks I met on my first day were great. I just arrived in the morning and asked if I could join in the swindle - and that was that. Half hour later I was teeing up with 11 other guys I'd never met before - all of whom were friendly & welcoming.

They have no tee times and have a swindle every Saturday and Sunday - drawn into 3 or 4 balls so everyone gets to play with different partners each week. £2 to enter and there's an individual prize and a team prize. But as they say, "you doesn't play to win, you play to avoid the walk of shame..." (ie coming last - and having to walk to the bar to put £1 into the captains charity).

Apparently today was a small crowd of just 12 - sometime it gets to 30 or more. So the big worry I had about getting "in" and finding partners doesn't seem to be a problem.

As to how did I do? Well, my nervous & crappy start ruined my card - think I only scored 2 points on the first five holes, but came good for the back 9. But with only 26 points I had to perform "The Walk of Shame" - much to everyone else's glee. On other hand, I was in the winning team, so overall came out of the day £2 up.

If club golf is always like this - friendly & fun (outside of the comps that is) then I'm going to enjoy it. Can't wait for next week.

Nice one :)

Thought you were worried about playing to your handicap ? 24 points off 13 holes is perfectly good golf.

Those nerves will be gone now, so that handicap will soon be tumbling with regular golf under your belt

WP sir,

That's the perfect way to get in with the in crowd. Glad it all went well after the initial nerves.

They are a good bunch of lads at D & S. Enjoy :)
