squeeky bum time, got my handicap today 26.0 i know some will look and think " so bloomin what" but for this last while ive struggled with consistency so 26.0 as opposed to my old 28.0 im quite happy

any ways i thought id throw myself right in at the deep end and enter a competition on Thursday, its my 1st proper competition since starting golf, what did you guys to to keep cool, prepare etc.,...

my objectives, are

1. dont come last
2. really dont make an ass of myself playing really bad
3. enjoy the experience and learn from it

big range session tomorrow night :D

Best thing you could of done entering a comp straight away. Dont worry about being nervous, everybody has been there. Everybody has hit a stinker off the first tee at some point too. No matter what you do somebody has done much worse so just relax and enjoy it.

Enjoy mate!

In terms of expectation- try and score 100 or less! That will maintain your handicap.

I wouldn't concern yourself about winning / losing / chopping handicap etc.

Just play your game.

I would also tell you to avoid that monster range session and hit the practice green / short game area instead.

A 5 foot putt in a comp will feel like 10 feet unless you are prepared, confident and proficient. That's where the scoring occurs!

Let us know how you get on.

Your club website is pretty good by the way.

Don't be surprised if you get on the first tee and feel really nervous. It is natural. Trust your swing, take a deep breath and swing easy. Relax and enjoy the round and to be honest if you come last so what. If you go out without too many expectations and course manage well you might just surprise yoursel

Double check your equipment the night before
make sure you remember the food and drink for the round in the morning.
Get there in good time
Spend half an hour chipping, wedging and putting and take that unstressed practice to the course. It is the short game that goes to pot if you are tense not helped when the adrenalin is flowing.
Force yourself to play a simple uncomplicated game avoiding high risk shots.
Relax and enjoy it. Good luck.

Don't have any expectations!!!! IMO this is one sure way to cock up as you will be heaping pressure on yourself, the absolute worst thing that can happen is you get 0.1 back.

Check you have enough ammo in your bag ;)

Do not try too hard, a good aim is a bogey every 2 holes. And whatever you do don't count your score on your way round just mark it and move on, do not let a bad hole effect you once it has happened move on there is nothing you can do. Good luck.

Good luck for Thursday. I know how you feel. I'm hoping to play/submit my 3rd card on Friday and then play my first medal on Sunday.

I'm taking note of the advice here too.

I'd echo what everyone else has said. You're bound to be nervous at the first but trust me, no one laughs if you stuff it up. After playing in not too many comps you'll see people of all handicaps hitting duffs, fats, tops, shermans, hooks, slices, you name it first up.

Oh, and in case you do happen to hit one clean first up, be prepared for people to say "26? I don't think so". However well intentioned it is, don't let playing partners make you think you're better than you are, because you start going for shots that you simply can't make. Stick to your plan. And good luck. It's great fun.

Good point.

Remember playing one of my first rounds at my new club with Revolt and parred the first (which I had never done before) to the tune of "28 handicap aye???".

Then proceeded to live up to expectations of the next 17 holes!

As everyone else has said, don't get too down if you mess up a bit on the first tee. Nerves are bound to kick in and its just a matter of overcoming them, which comes with experience (or in my case it does). I played my first comp (4BBB) since I restarted my golfing 'career' (haven't played competitively for over 8 years). Got really nervous on the first tee and topped my drive about 50 yards. Laughed it off and smashed the next one down the middle!

Me and my brother, who's in the same boat as me, combined for a net 65, Only 3 shots off the eventual winners!

Don't have any expectations, just enjoy it for what it is. Engage with your playing partners, enjoy the view, hit the ball as few times as you can manage it.

And don't worry about it. It's only golf. You could be at work, or worse, at the shops.

Good luck
