I'm chuffed to bits - I played my first comp at Merrist Wood GC in Guildford Saturday, 2nd tee time of the day at 7.12.

Played ok... blobbed on 5 holes, but hit some gross pars so a good few 3 pointers, even a 4 pointer with a par on the SI1.

Finished with 36 points, thought that it was a respectable score, and didn't think anything more of it! HDID email came through yesterday and I have been crowned champ!!

Won on countedback (I blobbed the 18th, so the other guy on 36 must have too) with a gross par on the 17th.

Amazing. I also got a .8 cut in my handicap, knocking a shot off to 21.2.

I'm so pleased!

Ironically, we were accused of slow play by the group behind (we were a little slow, however the 28 handicapper we played with had a mare with only 20 points, picking up on a good few holes) - the group behind us came over and moaned at us - turned out they never put their cards in at the end. We held them up on the 17th & 18th holes, not really enough to get shirty with us, and apparently they'd already had a bad game before getting to us.

I can't wait to mention to them that maybe it wasn't slow play that experienced, it was just playing all the shots needed to score on the hole, and playing like a CHAMPION!

I'll get off my high horse now.

Well done! Though always a bit iffy when a 'new boy' wins the first comp they enter!

Countback is actually last 9 holes (the last 6, 3, 1) so the last hole blob wasn't too significant.

Being 2nd group out does imply a responsibility to keep up with the group in front - as it affects the entire field! But sometimes it can't be helped - specially if someone is having a mare while others are Ok!

5 blobs and a win?? Jesus. Imagine your score if you actually played for 18 holes. The rest of the field need a boot up the arse

a 22 and a 28 handicapper in a fourball are always going to be slower than a more experienced group but it's something to be aware of if losing ground on the group ahead, especially during a stableford comp.

Congrats on the win though Bandit.

Mate, the way you hit the ball that handicap will soon start falling way down into the teens before you know it.

Good play though and keep up the good work. Remember though, as soon as you think you have the game sussed it will bite you on the short and curlys! :D

Thank you all. It's those blow up holes that stop me from getting a real big cut... I will master the art of not blowing up and get more cuts!!

Until then, I'll get on my donkey and wander on :whoo:

Wow! I've never heard of anyone winning with 5 blobs! Well done Dufferman, you'll have to change that name soon ;)

Are you a member at Merrist Wood Dufferman?

I've been thinking of going for a game there with a mate that lives in SW London - is it any good?

Yeah joined on the Freedom Play scheme there, so I can play all the crown golf courses with Merrist Wood my base club.

It is nice, quite tough, long rough across the whole course, which makes wayward shots difficult to find. The pro often says however close to the edge of the rough you put the ball, fire another one off just in case!

It's in lovely condition at the moment though. Greens are running beautifully.

What he sez. The way you hit the ball at West Hill... you're way better than 21 Adam.
