Firm and straight or dead weight and break?

How to do you (try to) hole your short putts?

I don't think I've ever changed method.....I'm always one that tries to leave myself in the "dustbin lid" territory to leave myself a 2 putt rather than risk hitting it hard and leaving a long putt back.

All depends on a number of factors

Pace of the green

The way the green has been breaking

Uphill

Downhill

Distance from hole

Do both all depending on the circumstances above

Handicap of 20 - firm and straight inside 4/5 feet every time. Holing out has always been the most consistent part of my game. That said I have had a couple of periods where I've missed a few more than I should. This is usually fixed with a few solid confidence building sessions on the putting green, not attempting anything over 6 feet.

I usually try and hole them with a yippy stroke that ends up halfway to the hole if I'm lucky

Desperately need to work on my putting to be less tentative and more firm and straight on the shorter ones.

Click which you do in your relevant handicap section, it'll be interesting to see if there's a pattern.

Also, when and why did people switch from one method to the other?

I am trying my best to hit putts firmer and take some of the break out of them, if i cant hole a 2-3ft putt coming back i shouldnt be off 4.

This is a bit swings and roundabouts. If you try to die the ball into the hole you risk leaving the putt short and it will be more affected by any breaks. If you hit it firmly you are more likely to get a lip out, and if you miss you may leave yourself a longish putt coming back.

Depends on length of putt, speed of green, uphill/downhill and amount of break.

Within 10 feet im trying to make the putt as straight as possible (unless downhill). Outside 10 feet i'm trying to hole it but leave it within 2 feet if it doesnt drop. Outside 20 feet I'm happy to 2 putt all day long.

Downhill putts I'm trying to drop it in as it dies, uphill is firm on whatever line looks good from where im putting from.

I tend to try and roll it dead weight, mainly because I'm scared of the 3ft coming back. Off of 13 I think as long as I can get down in 2 putts I'll do ok. I guess as you get lower you have to think about having more 1 putts.

Generally fairly dead as I don't want to be 3ft past the hole coming back. Occasionally I have tried ramming them in but after a miss or two where I have flown past the hole I prefer dropping them in.

Wouldn't it be nice if the hole was a little bit bigger? Then you could run your putts more firmly at the hole with less risk of it lipping out, or of missing the return putt if the first one misses.

Yes, and if the greens were flatter it would be easier too.

No it wouldn't!

Back to the OP.

Firm and straight for me.

Other factors come into play also, but often for me, this.

The greens at our course are anything but flat, so you usually have to get both the break and the pace right to have any chance of holing the putt. I have played one East Anglian course where the greens were almost flat, and it was easier to putt there.
