I'll start by admitting my culinary skills go as far as pot noodles and microwave meals.

I depend solely on my better half and mother of my 4 daughters to provide me with all my meals :o

We were eating out this dinner time (need to keep her sweet in order to watch Aintree & then the Maters today!) when she challenged me to make a dish tomorrow night.

Only proviso is no fish as she doesnt eat it.

So... where do i start finding recipes? It cant be nothing too difficult as i dont want to screw it up and end up defeated using JustEat!

Thanks in advance

Steak and chips. It doesn't get much easier. Get it from the butchers though to make sure it's a nice cut and it'll be spot on. Hot Griddle pan medium rare boom.

I would go for a spag Bol. Keep it very simple!

Buy a jar of dolmio, buy some Minced beef, spagetti. Maybe some garlic bread, grated parmasan,

Recipe and instructions will be on the jar. use them!!

If you can't do a spag boll there's something wrong. It comes in a jar, you add it to mince and slap it over spaghetti (the long thin stuff, not the tinned variety!). Bit of garlic bread, bottle of wine, jobs a good un.

Pork chops, smother in honey and finely cut chilli, served with fries and side salad.

Don't forget the wine, and give her a glass before the meal... it'll hide the disaster...

OR something easy but popular, fajitas.

Buy a family pack of the old el paso. All you do is chop chicken breasts, an onion and a couple of peppers into strips, fry the lot, stick the spice packet on and dish it all up.

Lots of bowls of shop bought guacamole, sour cream, cheese, salsa and everyone helps themselves.

Fine balance Big D, you don't want to do too well....;)

Pasta and sauce would be perfect, although if you are feeling a little more adventurous what about a roast chicken?

Just bung it in the oven for about 90mins bit of oil, salt pepper on skin (read timings)
Roast pots - peel what you want, boil for 5 mins to soften a little, drain and put on a baking tray, bit of oil over them and in the oven for 30 mins.
Veg - peel and boil for 5-10 mins
Gravy - Bisto :D

Bit of washing up but the diners can sort that out while you relax....

Here's an easy chicken one I really like.

A few dollops of mustard into a bowl.
Teaspoon of cumin sprinkled over that, mix it through.
Add some cubed chicken breast and a tin of pineapple chunks to that, mix it up so the mustard/cumin coats everything.
Chop up some green beans or maybe a pepper and toss the lot into a wok.
Cook for about ten mins and have it with boiled rice.

It tastes way,way better than it sounds. You don't taste the mustard, the cumin covers it. Trust me, it's fantastic and its very healthy as well for an added bonus.

Ha! I thought about either spag bol or mac and cheese.

Spag Bol

You will need:

1 large onion (I like red onions for this, sometimes shops only stock little 'uns so buy two)
1 bulb of garlic
1 tube of tomato paste/puree (you can buy the wee cans of them if you're not going to use it again)
1 packet of mince (beef, or lamb if you prefer)
2 tins chopped tomatoes (cheap is fine)
Dried (or fresh if you're fancy) basil
Packet of fresh pasta
Optional parmesan cheese

Cost = approx £7.50

Method

1. Peel the onion. Chop it roughly into small strips or cubes. Stick it aside in a bowl.
2. Bash the garlic with the heel of your hand. Cloves will separate. Bash each clove with the back of a knife. The garlic skin will come off now with a little picking. Use around 3 to 4 cloves. Chop as small as you can and chuck it in the same bowl as the onion.
3. Deep frying pan on (if you don't have one, use a large pot) with a little oil (olive is best). Once hot, chuck in the contents of the bowl. Stir and cook slowly until the onions are 'sticky'.
4. Big blob of tomato paste in the frying pan and stir. Cook for a minute
5. Throw in your chopped tomatoes and a liberal amount of salt until simmering
6. Sprinkle in dried basil or tear (important to tear) fresh basil and throw into the pot. Cook through. Sauce done.

7. To cook the mince, chuck into a pot with a very tiny bit of cold water, just so it barely covers the bottom. Stir, stir, stir. The mince will cook through. You may notice a lot of fat and water coming out, so when it's cooked, strain.
8. Combine mince with sauce and stir over a low heat
9. Big pan of salted boiling water on. Chuck in fresh pasta and cook. This will only take a few minutes.
10. Combine pasta and bolognese, or if preferred serve pasta and spoon on bolognese. Grate on some parmesan.

There you have it. 10 steps to a half-decent, cooked from scratch, spag bol.

Thanks guys, you've all been very helpful - i have many ideas now

If you dont hear from me tomorrow night - she's killed me for me poor cooking or my poor cooking has killed her

I'm trying to imagine the combination of pineapple and cumin - with the background heat from the mustard. Mustard seeds and cumin are two basics of my curry spice base so I get that - but the pineapple...? Therefore as I can't imagine it I'm going to have to try it out.

Chaps, that is NOT how to make a Spag bol. If you like processed sauces full of sugar, then yeah, it's a nice easy Spag Bol. If you want to make an easy, fresh, and MUCH tastier Spag Bol, then Virtuocity's ingredients will do the trick. Could do with a healthy splash of your favourite red to make it even better. A Bolognese sauce is not complete without red wine for me.

Easiest one for me is roast belly pork. Get a slab of belly pork and put it on a rack over a roasting tray with water in it. Put it in the oven at 220 degrees for half an hour. Reduce to 160 degrees for another hour, take it out and cover the crackling in lemon juice then back in for an hour. Comes out perfect and most of it just involves leaving it in the oven whilst you watch sport. Cheap as chips as well

Chicken wrapped in bacon.
Get 2 of the biggest breasts you can find, slice the front edge and spoon in a dollop of philidelphia cheese (I prefer the chilli one) wrap in bacon, chuck it in the oven for about 40 minutes or so.
Serve with fries and corn on the cob.
Winner Winner Chicken Dinner

I posted this in a thread a while ago, it's a sure fire winner and dead easy to make

1Kg Mince beef (or 1/2 beef, 1/2 pork) obviously I'm using the brisket instead
1 large onion chopped
3 garlic cloves choped
2 tbslp vegetable/rapeseed oil (not need in the slow cooker obviously)
3 chopped chillis (I'm using jalapenos which Sainsburys are selling fresh now, not them in jars)
1 tbsp chipotle chili paste
500ml passata
500ml beef stock
1 can Budweiser
4 tsp chili powder (or as much or little as you like)
2 tsp ground cumin (I use toasted cumin seeds bashed down to a powder when I can be @rsed)
1/2 tsp mustard powder (as above with mustard seeds)
1/2 tsp brown sugar
1 pinch oregano
1 tsp paprika
1 tsp cayenne pepper
1 tsp unsweetened cocoa powder
1/2 tsp ground coriander (again I use seeds sometimes)
a good glug of Louisiana hot sauce or that Cholula mexican hot sauce
1 tsp flour
1 tsp cornflour
Salt and pepper to taste

Fry off the onions until soft, add garlic and chilis for another 3 minutes.
Add the beef and fry until browned (don't fry the beef off first it doesn't taste the same). Add everything else and simmer for a couple of hours. Remove the lid and let it thicken for an hour or so.
