Went out yesterday for a round with a guy I've met at my new club a few times and joined in with his regular group. Was a lovely day down here in the south coast and I played the best round of golf I have played in some years! Having agreed to all put £2 each in the pot for the best stableford score, I went and shot a gross level par 71 for 46 points. I had 5 birdies including 3 twos. Question I have is should I mention the round to the handicap secretary as being a newish member I don't want to get a reputation, problem is I have yet to play to my handicap in a comp!

It was one of those days when I hit it well and holed a few putts - any thoughts?

Definitely mention it to the h/cap sec, preferably in front of one of your group.
He will probably do nothing about it but will be 'logged' and may be considered if the good scoring continues in the future

Good round.

No need to mention it to the sec- you've as much chance of shooting 90 as 75 in your next round- that's golf!

I joined a new club this year and started to improve week on week. After 3 cuts, I sent the handicap sec a wee email to let him know that I'm an improving golfer. In the end, I needn't had bothered- people had started talking to him and in the end I got a general play cut.

Speaking to the sec won't stop people talking about you behind your back. To be fair, the majority will be gracious enough to congratulate you after a good run of form.

Let's see what the next few comps bring.

Having spoken to the person who propsed me, I decided to send an email to the handicap sec, he said it would be better hearing it from me and not someone else. Its not like I dont play in comps either, I have played in everything available to me since I joined in September.

I used to be able to do it consistently in comps, having not played regular competitive golf for 5 years, I am still struggling with the odd couple of howlers on the card, but I knew I wasnt far off playing well. Yesterday I holed the putts that last sunday kept shaving the hole.

Have a comp this saturday so want to play well as I am only a bad round from going up to 11. Maybe I play better when money is on the table

First off... nice shooting, must have been a great day!

I don't understand why if you have one decent round then you should need to mention it to any official of the club, surely the only place to bring it up is in the bar while you bore everybody with a shot by shot run down of your round? ;)

If you play in qualifiers throughout the season then you'll get the correct handicap surely? I've only been a member of a club for a few years and despite thinking I could be a lowish handicap golfer, I've never managed to reproduce that in a Medal. I've shot a few decent rounds with mates at my track (9 or 10 shots lower than my handicap) and am at the moment constantly a couple under my official handicap with my mates. I've got to take that game to course with a card in my hand though. That's part of the challenge of golf.... isn't it ?

At the moment it's a one off round

If you do it again then possibly put in a supplementary and also speak to HC sec then

Club Sec replied to my email and said no one had mentioned anything to him, he just congratulated me on a good round and was please I was enjoying my golf at the new club.

Im sure if I do the same in a comp it would raise a few eyebrows!
