And I was somewhat impressed! So easy to hit!

I had a hit of a friends Callaway FT-3 (neutral) 4H and it flew! I would say that the 4H in stiff graphite flew further than my 3 iron hit sweet - is the 4H not a 4 iron replacement?

Anyway, changed my view on them for sure. I am now more keen than ever to get out and buy a 3 wood, and ditch the 5 wood to be replaced by a 18/19 degree hybrid.

The hybrids seem to land softer than a fairway wood, yet get the same distance.

I was always of the opinion of why bother/learn to hit an iron you fanny etc, but after hitting one, I can see the attraction of them!

LOVELY!

Beware of a hybrid less than 20 degree. They can be hell on toast to hit clean. make sure you test on enough before buying it.

How come it took you so long to get to hybrids? I've got 2 and they are so versatile.

Just always saw them as the easy option - I guess it was the people I was playing golf with at the time ramming hybrids down your throat as the best things since sliced bread. I thought I'd persever with the irons.

Also, one of my ol dhome courses back in Scotland (Alford) only measures about 5,500 yards... most holes were pretty much driver & 8 iron, so the long irons & fairways were never used (check my up to date 5 wood in the sig!)

The courses I play now are longer, and long irons & fairways come into play more. Also, improved course management means that the driver is not the default off the tee, which is where I find the 3 wood would certainly come to use.

I reckon I'd be getting one to replace a wood rather than an iron as I hit my irons well, but the fact that you can land a hybrid softly on a green is a major advantage.

Perhaps the 4 wood & 21 hybrid is a better combination…

I'll be sure to hit plenty to see what works best, and fits the distance gaps best also.

My hybrid is an 18 deg Ping Rapture, it's great as a 5 wood replacement off the tee / fairway, but if you want one to "rescue" you from the rough then you will need more loft, maybe 22 or even 24 degs.

I've had in my bag hybrids by Taylor Made, Cobra, Hogan, Ben Ross, Orlimar, Mizuno, Bridgestone and to be frank they all play and feel the same.
Lets face it the design of these things is all a copy of the original TM Rescue mid.
So much easier to wield than a 3 or 4 iron but with graphite shafts they do go a lot further. For me, not being the longest of hitters, that is a good thing. The 200 yard shot now requires a decent swing of the 4r hybrid whereas before it had to be an absolutely perfectly struck 3 iron.
I'm keeping mine!
