Hello, I've been a lurker for some time, been getting a feel for the forum and I've been waiting for a reason to introduce myself. That reason happened this morning as I hit a net 58 (gross 73) in a medal qualifier and I'm still in a state of delirium. I'm no foreigner to being called a bandit, I got my first handicap 3 years ago and started at 28. I am cursed with what others call a good swing, but as we all know, good style and good consistency rarely go hand in hand. I've struggled to find a consistent score, mixing birdies with quadruple bogies on far too many occasions. Recently though I've been improving on my mental approach and shot selection, it's working out really well.

My goals for this year were to get to 15 handicap (from 19) and break 80, both of which have now been hit. By my calculation (CSS pending) I'm now playing off of 12. It's great to be able to look at the rest of the season as a way to improve without undue pressure on myself. First step is to hit low 70s again, but I understand the state of mind I managed to keep today much better than I did previously and I think it's easily possible for me to do better before the end of the season.

I live near St Andrews and get to play on some fantastic courses in the area. All things going well I hope to stick around here for a while and maybe get to meet/play with a few of you one day.

What's your home course ?

Gross 73 net 58 !!! That's some scoring

Cheers guys. Home course is St Michaels but I have a St Andrews links ticket also. I'd play more if it wasn't for the family commitments. I really do regret not taking up the game when I was a boy now, that's going back 20 years or so. I never had a junior handicap, I couldn't afford to join the local club when I was a nipper but I was pretty handy knocking a 6 iron (my only club) around the sheep fields where I grew up.

Nothing wrong with blowing your own trumpet!

I find it hurts the bottom of your back after a while though :-)

Just remember how much you enjoyed the game before you went out today, dont allow yourself to become fixated on scores. Improving is a bonus, this game is all about fun ;)

Great shoot and congrats

Played St Michaels when i stayed in a B&B right across the road, i liked the original 9 holes.

Yep, the back nine are clearly the best asset, that Tom Morris knew a thing or two about building courses. The front nine is beginning to mature now, the new plantations are taking hold but there's a preservation order on that area of land which means they are limited to certain species only so it's slow growth. I enjoy the front nine, it has its charms but it can be hellish windy, the 2nd hole which is par3 and 150 yards carry up hill is probably my least favourite. It's a nasty shot to face when you've hardly warmed up.

I always enjoy playing, even the bad rounds give me something good to think about. I just like hitting balls and I get the most enjoyment from a really nicely struck ball flying on the line I chose. Scoring well gives me a thrill but it's those well struck shots that give me the biggest smile at the end of the day.

Results are in, cut from 15.1 to 12.2 - I've got a foursomes match on Thursday night and I'm looking forward to seeing how I play again this weekend. One shot at a time...
