Some 18 months after picking some clubs up for the first time I've finally broke 100, well, I haven't, I broke 50 for 9 holes, but you know what I mean.

Leaving that misbehaving driver in the bag mostly certainly helped as OOB is the biggest issue for me but the putting was pretty good for me.

Only tempted to use the driver on the 476 par 5 and creamed it 310 (fair bit of downhill) according to the GPS and left a 7 iron onto the green. (Left the eagle putt 5 feet short and lipped out the birdie - can't have everything).

A little backspin on the 80 yard wedge on the par 3. (240 yard par 3? Having a laugh?) Was another highlight.

Now - where do I book a lesson to learn how to hit that driver properly the other times I get it out?

Congrats on the 50 :) Try not to concentrate on beating it each time as it takes focus off your current round. Just play to your best each time.

As for the driver, keep on practising. If you're in desperate need of a lesson with a pro, have one, if anything just to see where you're going wrong/right. On the course though you're on your own.

Get down the range and hit a bucket load with it. A tip though - try using the grass tees (if you have them) and tee it up yourself each time. This way you get to perform your pre-shot routine everytime, and let's face it - it's far more realistic than hitting off a fat rubber tee!

Well done!!
I remember breaking 50 for 9 holes a few times, before I broke 100 over 18.
It was good for the confidence, as you now know you got it in you, its just a case of doing it!
Well done again!

We as a family, Dad, my brother and I, started playing golf when a 9 hole course opened beside us.

Every night, two or more rounds all with hired clubs, were played, the clubhouse lights going off announced the end of our birdie battle and time to hand back our clubs.

Some 25 years later when we had all moved on to a better golfing standard, my father died and among his keepsakes were our first cards beating 55, then 50, then 45 and lastly recording a 38.

Happy memories all those years ago but I can assure you that remembering beating the 100, even now, offers a wee bit of mental elation!!

Well done on the 50, not bad!

I can't speak for the majority, but I mostly avoid the driver at the range. I take it one time in five (?) and even then, I put an impact tape on it just to see if I need to tweak my set-up.

I find the range balls hopeless for driver practise; 1) the ball doesn't carry anywhere near a proper ball and 2) it's very hard to envisage the shot standing on a square mat in a square bay along a straight line of bays.

I mostly practise with a 3 wood (off one of my own rubber tees) and read into that whatever I can. I know it's not the same, but I just can't stand hitting drivers at the range.

Mostly, I hit it well on the course. Seeing the hole, feeling the shot and trusting my swing sees me OK.

Well DOne on the 50!!!! Its certainly a great feeling.

I have only just broken the 100 the other day, scored 99 which is still +29 but hey I DID IT!!!!!

I'm trying to be relaxed about it ready for the next round so as not to pressurise myself. Good luck with getting it again and again and agian.

Well done mate, every shot of a round feels like winning a major. You'll be doing it all the time soon enough but dont add pressure on your game if you dont. I've learned that mistake but now you know you can do it, enjoy.

Well done, now aim to break 45! ;)

If it's only your Driver you're having issues with, either the club's not right for you, or (more likely) it's a mental thing. Choke down on the grip and pretend it's a 3W, and take an 80% swing. When I do that at the range I hit it just as far as when I try to knock the skin off the ball.
