Hi all,

Can anybody recommend a Camcorder for filming and viewing a golf swing?

Cheers

Andy.

I will try and find out one for you lads, a mate of mine has recently bought a camera and the full version of the C Swing analysis software and sets it up down at the practice ground to work on his game. I am so jealous, whilst it seems a bit 'gadgety' and needless I would love to be able to do this. I hasten to say however that he outlaid a fair wad of cash to purchase it all, the camera was recommended by the people who make the software.

From what I know though any camera with a 'sports' high frame capacity mode would be sufficient, but obviously the more you spend the better suited it will be to the task.

Yeah that would be good Dave. I used to use my N95, pretty good to watch back in real time, bu not great for slowing down, freeze frame etc. I would imagine it would have to have a good FPS rate, I have no idea what great is though!

Lads, I bought the Leadbetter Interactive DVD's which come with the V1 Software (apparently its what a lot of the Pro's use?) and I have a JVC Hard Disk Camcorder (£150 on ebay) which I have to set the shutter speed to at least 1000:1 put it fifteen behind or in front of me.

Havent had chance to use it many times but when I have its been brilliant and it really highlighted how my swing was goig out to in.

I bought a cam corder 2nd hand off ebay for less than £100, and it is great (machine, spare tapes, carry bag, spare battery, barely used). I can slo mo it very well, and freeze it and then frame by frame advance. Mrs mog has since gone digital, which is cool, but I still think you can get most of what you need off an old fashioned mini DV.

Almost all new Camcorders will be good enough.

If you want to catch every last frame, you could end up going round in circles and spending a fortune.

I just use a cheap and cheerful Sony £150, as does my pro.

Depends what you want to see.

I have just been into the toshiba shop and they have these available.

They shoot at 30fps and the guy who works there says that they dont come much better at entry level. They are dearer in the Tosh shop though than online so maybe I could get a price match.

Casio EXILIM Pro EX-F1 1200 fps and less than a grand(597 seems to be the lowest atm), up to you to decide if its worth it! haha, their website is amazing, it looks as smooth as the swingvision that the yanks use on the pga.

I am all for filming the swing but unless you are a very good golfer with a sound swing knowledge do you actually get any benefit from seeing your swing. How do you know what is wrong. Can you get software that will highlight flaws.

My coach films me and downloads it onto his lpatop where he has some software (bit like on Sky's Golf Night) where he can draw lines etc to show various set up and swing issues. I understand what he is showing me but only because he knows what is wrong and what to look for.

Can anyone explain what benefit I will get if I film my own swing

yup you can download v1 pro and use it for a month (there is a slightly unethical way of prolonging the demo mode) and it can be set up to do all sorts but really it takes a pro to use it.

Sorry guys the link i provided above is the wrong cam it is http://www.pcwb.com/catalogue/item/A0434169?cidp=Froogle one instead.

Brendy is that right 1200 frames per second, the guy I spoke to said his £3000 cam only recorded 50 frames per second.

Homer, Its not so much my actual swing I like to look at. Its what my head, hips, legs and feet are upto.

I want it mainly to collate some footage of my golfing, walking, biking etc. It will just come in handy for the range!

I think if you are working on a specific fault, or feel you have regressed back to an older fault, this is easy to see on video. For instance, my biggest fault is casting, and this is very evident on video. No, it won't tell me how to cure it, but I know that anyway, I just check periodically that I am still happy with my swing.

It also tells me if I am suffering from Elvis jelly legs, and swaying all over the place, and helps with posture. Once you see that your posture is so poor it looks like you are trying to estimate how deep a hole is, you can do something about it.

For these, you don't need hundreds of frames per sec, any old camera will do. You don't really need software either. Just have an image of Tiger in your head, and compare it to what you see on the video. Yuck.

I think for the likes of Homer, who has a far more technical approach to the game than me, self video analysis would not work.

Bang on murph, ALthough the more FPS the better, I dont want to pay silly money out but get the most out of what I am spending, I do like to freeze the video's so I can compare different parts of the swing.

Yes 1200 fps, its a bit of an animal using a new sensor.
For a swing clip its a hell of a lot of money yes but its a cracking all round camera, 6mp with 7 flashes and pics per second on drive and also 1\40000 (yup forty thousandths of a second) It can record 60fps in high definition too. Its on my wish list and will eventualy get it or something very similar when they break out on to the market.

I had presumed that most half-decent players were able to see SOME of their recurring problems with the use of a video. I guess a lot depends on what you know, how you got to know it (I had lots of video lesson many years ago) and what you can see as a sort of non-expert.

I know that for me, I like to check my 3 Ps; pivot, plane and path, all of which is very possible without the use of specialist software (god forbid!).

I check my legs keep their flex (and my posture is good), I film from in front and down-the-line to check my plane (at the point I set my wrists) and can see if my old excessive movement of the head to the left is present. I can see if I'm casting or where I lose the lag and so on. OK, I can't read a swing like a pro (that knows most of these things visually and instinctively) but I can check all the flaws that I've been over with a pro over the years.
