I was discussing films with my, recently turned 14, year old grandson last night. I've had the film Blazing Saddles ready for him to watch, and said that the next time he's round we'll watch it. I can't, he said, I'm not old enough.
Well, he's right, I've just checked. It's rated "R" which sort of equates to 15.
But get this, he's watched Bourne Identity, where there is violent fights, people getting shot dead and blown up, and that's PG13. The Mummy, which in my opinion is very scary, I don't so scary films, is also a PG13.

Utterly ridiculous. So 14 year olds can see violence and death, and can be scared out of their wits, but are not allowed to watch funny stuff.:confused::confused:

You can look on the BBFC site for why a film has its rating. I suspect excessive use of the N word has done for Blazing Saddles. The Mummy will be justified as fantasy violence but I agree with you regarding the Bourne films. There can be some odd decisions but as I say, use the BBFC site, it is very good.

But the use of the N word and the clear casual racism in the film might encourage people to think it's acceptable.

Ratings are odd. I took my 15 year old son to see Deadpool (15) recently and was a little surprised at some of the content on display in it. It was a little unexpected on my part, and whilst it doesn't bother me usually, I was a little uncomfortable sitting next to him whilst we were watching it.

NMW - I took my 16 yr old son with me and we both loved it. It was pushing the boundaries but I was okay with him seeing it. My 14yr old daughter wanted to come but I refused to take her. After having seen the film I strongly believe I was right. Deadpool is a borderline 18 film so it is one you need to think about before taking your kids to.

Knowledgeable people with experience of this kind of thing agree that the BBFC have improved loads recently and mostly get it right. Most of the fault is the stupidity of parents who drag kids along to films without doing any research on what it contains and why it is rated as it is, it is not just violence. Look on the BBFC app as that explains everything you need to know.

Totally agree, people do no research and assume, for example, that because it has superheroes in it Deadpool is the same as the Avengers etc. Hell, the 12 Rating was introduced because people complained about not being able to take their kids to watch Batman in the late 80s. You get the same with video games, parents doing no research and buying young kids copies of Grand Theft Auto. It is a video game, it must be fine for kids.......

Blazing Saddles would never be made in the modern day. No-one would back a project like that nowadays. It was a cult movie of it's time, but, that time has long gone.

BBFC is quite good these days and they put Insight sections on their website - these may contain plot spoilers. With Force Awakens, for example, it was 12A, but my 8 and 6 year olds desperately wanted to see it, so we waited for the BBFC Insight to become available, and had a look, and based on that, as well as knowing they had seen Star Wars 3 where Anakin turns into Darth, we went and they were fine. A few other kids in the cinema were upset by an upsetting plot point, and a couple. My kids were shocked (I was a bit shocked too) and after said they gave the movie 8 out of 10, but the eldest said it would have been 10 out of 10 if it wasn't for the upsetting event.

I took my 8 and 6 yr olds too. The 6 year old left the cinema (with his mum) after the tentacle monster escaped on the ship. The eight year old didn't care and watched the whole film - loved it.
