Hello all,

I'm holidaying in Fife all of next week and my current plan is to play the old course, if I can get on as a single golfer.

If I can't I think one of the websites like teeofftimes.co.uk or teetimes.co.uk are doing very good offers on the Torrance and the Kittocks for as low as £24.75.

I may also be playing Pitreavie, due to a kind offer from a fellow forum member.Just a few opinions sought on:-

1. Does anyone know what time you have to approach the starter, or can you ring him, for the old course?
2. I know the castle course has had rave reviews, but which is the better out of the Torrrance and the Kittocks?
3. Where else is recommended within 50 miles of Anstruther, I believe Crail is good also, but would appreciate any other pointers.
4. Good pubs in St. Andrews, what I would call arl man/real ale/character pubs.

Appreciate any pointers.

Oak rooms in Stan Drews.:p

Seriously just take a wander round as there are several good boozers that would no doubt fit your requirements.Make sure you go to the Dunvegan for a look at the memorabilia.

Enter the ballot the day before, his time of year you are pretty sure to get in I would say rather than hang around at the starters hut.

Torrance and Kittocks? Not much between them really.

Try Elie,Crail,Ladybank,Scotscraig.....the list is endless.

Sorry to divert off topic (slightly).......what has happened to Drumoig?? Never see it mentioned anywhere now.

It wasn't brilliant but there were some fantastic holes with greens dug into big slabs of rock, thought the plan was for it was to be a top venue.

Went tits up as the SNGC/SGU place....huge debacle! .... but it is still open and I have heard some good reports about it recently.

Lundin Links is a good test of golf and not too far away. Nothing should be too busy at this time of year.

I think I've played Lundin links. Is this the one where there is a course right next to it, and they play a match each year over 1/2 of each course, as they used to be one course years ago. Or is that somewhere else. If it is, is the other one worse or better.

Leven Links is the one just West of Lundin Links, courses separated by a wee wall.

Which reviews have you been reading? I have only heard bad reports of the Castle, even from scratch and low handicap players. Too tricked up with greens like upturned saucers apparently.
Between the Torrance and Kittocks I prefer the Kittocks. There has been a lot of rain up here this week so it would probably be better sticking to links golf as there are plenty to choose from, most of which have already been mentioned. If you want to travel north of the Tay then there is also Carnoustie Championship and Burnside to consider.

I enjoyed the Castle Course.....it is just a shame the greens are a total joke with the crazy undulations! Not upturned saucers at all, just dead elephants buried under them.

Really nice layout though,we paid £30 I think on an SGU deal but would spew at the thought of paying anything over £50 for it.

The castle was featured on golfing world recently, and probably in a magazine, but as you know these reviews tend to focus on the views/history (none so far) and overall beauty of the course, rather than playing around it. They were also mentioning heavily the fact that it was in the top 100 already. Played carnoustie last year - loved it.

Why don't you get the 3 day ticket at St Andrews, if you time it right you should still be able to get 6 rounds for £120, I did it when I was there & all you do is book your tee times the day before (New course was just turn up & join the que)

Great shout, but I think the divorce would cost me more. Up there for 8 nights, doing well to get 2/3 games in, but HID is understanding but not daft.

Other days walking, whisky tour, Isle of may boat trip (weather permitting), visit to Stirling, Perth, drinking, maybe Hearts V Rangers on Sunday.

If you are playing as a single then you cannot enter the ballot for the old course. You have to approach the starter which in reality means being there early. First tee time at the moment is 8am so the starter will show up at about 7:30. Mid summer, I joined the queue at 5am and was 19th. The guy at the head of the queue was there at 3:45. First tee time was 6:30.

I would also suggest Leven, Lundin, Crail & Ladybank. Anstruther also has a good 9 holer.

forget about the fairmont just play the new jub or old then leven scotscraig or ladybank:-) loads of choices for food and drink in st a's!

Lundin Links,Crail and Scotscraig come highly recommended. If you don't get on the Old Course, you should still play the New and the Jubilee. Played Ladybank which is lovely inland course, although I think they are doing maintenance to the greens this week. Had a look at the Castle course, which looks superb, but the greens are crazy.:)

Fairmont- The Torrance is a good track (Links type design) although really not that memorable, that has just had the Scottish Senior Open at the end of August. The Kittocks is more memorable with some great holes (Water, gully's and great views). They both have lightening quick greens all year round, I played The Kittocks last November and it was like putting on glass even that late in the season. The Torrance was a couple of weeks ago and it was in great condition even with the rain we had had for the week before.
