In stroke play today a ball was 'lost' in the rough.

A fellow competitor found the ball and lifted without asking or marking to identify Is there a 1 shot penalty?

Would it be different in match play?

If it was "lost" and another ball had been put into play I'm not sure where your going with this?

"A fellow competitor" Was it his ball? If so rule 12-2 says it's a 1 stroke penalty for failing to mark the ball and / or advise a fellow competitor or opponent. In match play the same penalty applies.

If a FC lifts (ie moves) it there is no penalty and it must be replaced.

If his opponent moves it during a search, no penalty and it must be replaced, otherwise the opponent gets a 1 stroke penalty and it must be replaced

Sorry but perhaps I am being a big thick here or have not expressed myself clearly.

A fellow competitor (A) lifted the ball of (B) in a stroke play Competition in order to identify the ball. He did not mark the ball, just picked it up.

Does he incur a 1 shot penalty?
